Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch As we approach Christmas, the likelihood of

becoming a victim of crime – particularly fraud and theft – increases. Criminals know that we will all be carrying more money, fi lling our bags with valuables and that many of our homes will have shiny, and very expensive, new devices given or received as gifts.

We also tend to forget ourselves, putting bags of gifts down while we grab a mulled wine at an outside bar, or – worse – drive home after the work’s Christmas party believing that the bubbly from earlier in the evening won’t put us over the limit. Please remember to properly lock your home when you go out, check your insurance covers gifts waiting to be wrapped and – crucially – book the taxi before you go out!

Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch has been operating since the 1980s and relies on a large network of volunteers to help keep us safe and build our communities. Many of those volunteers have been supporting us from the start, and we need to make sure that, as they get older and can no longer deliver the newsletter to their neighbours, others step forward to fi ll the void.

We have members in all but three roads in BH18, and ‘Contacts’ look after on average 16 properties. They deliver the newsletter once a month, and those 16

neighbours know who they are so that messages can be passed on about

concerns that the committee can look into. Once a year, the Contact collects the £1 subscription and passes it to their co-ordinator. The role of a Contact is possibly the least time consuming way you can volunteer in our community – taking between 15 and 30 minutes just once a month, but it is a crucial one. Without new Contacts, the long term future of the Watch is in doubt because that personal contact is what keeps crime down and our community strong.

Please do consider whether you could join our group of Contacts – the leafl ets are dropped to your home and can go out over a period of several days when it suits you; walking the dog, popping to the shops on a Saturday morning, or taking the children for a scoot.

All that remains is to wish you a very Merry and Safe Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year free of scams and frauds.
