Children's Health: Threat Of The Net

This was a worrying recent headline: “One in four British girls hit by depression at 14 as experts blame increase in cyber bullying and academic pressure.”

It came from the large millennium cohort study:

Cyberbullying involves using technology to bully people. It can include texting, instant messaging, and posting on social media and gaming sites. It can be relentless as it can happen at any time of the day. With the power of the internet, bullying images and messages can be shared and therefore seen by many people very quickly.

How to avoid it: • Don’t give out personal details, such as your phone number or address.

• Think carefully before posting photos or videos of you or your friends online.

• Only give your mobile number to close friends. • Protect passwords, and never give your friends access to your accounts.

Flagship Wimborne First

School has been announced as

the fi rst ‘Flagship’ school for Jigsaw!

Carole Catton, Dorset’s Jigsaw consultant, visited Wimborne First School to thank them for encouraging other schools to adopt the Jigsaw scheme – which develops children’s personal and social skills – by presenting the school with a certifi cate, a giant Jigsaw Jack and declaring them the fi rst Flagship school for Jigsaw in the UK.

Headteacher, Sarah Hartley and PSHE Leader, Rebecca Drake were delighted that the school’s hard work had been recognised and that Jigsaw has had such a positive impact on the children.

• Use the privacy settings on social media. • Don’t forward nasty emails. • Learn how to block instant messages or use mail fi lters to block emails.

• Know how to report bullying to social media sites, internet service providers or website administrators. Ask a parent or teacher for help, or look at the advice on the following websites: http://www.childnet.com/young-people http://www.antibullyingpro.com/

To stop the bullying, speak to someone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s the fi rst step to resolving a situation that’s not acceptable. Tell someone you trust, such as a parent, carer, teacher or friend. Do not reply to cyberbullying, it is likely to make it worse.
