Business News In Brief

Business leaders in the West Midlands have welcomed the appointment of Phil Carlin as chairman of Mayor Andy Street’s Business Advisory Group. Mr Carlin is managing director of @Severn Capital, Birmingham’s largest apartment developer which delivers £700 million of investment to the city. Chamber chief executive Paul Faulkner said: “We are delighted that a

person of Phil’s high calibre has been appointed to this important role. “As the largest organisation representing businesses in Greater Birmingham, we look forward to engaging with Phil on the many issues and challenges facing the West Midlands.”

More than 10,000 people have now signed up for the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run, which takes place on 15 October. The run is a half marathon and will start in

Jennens Road before finishing back in the city centre in front of thousands of supporters. Among those taking part in the Simplyhealth

Great Birmingham Run is 33-year-old teacher Stuart Warner (pictured) who, just two years ago, tipped the scales at 25st 5lbs and has since lost over six stone. Stuart reckons getting into running has ‘probably saved his life’ and he

amazed himself by completing his first-ever running event, the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k, in April.

A digital toolkit designed to streamline access to services provided for members of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) has been launched. The new member toolkit will be available on the GBCC’s website from

today, providing member companies and their staff with easy access to its far-reaching services. Although the toolkit will be an invaluable asset for new members, it also

serves as a useful reminder for existing members of what the Chamber can offer. It contains suggested content for inclusion in internal company newsletters or email updates, social media posts and an email signature image and poster. It also includes brief FAQs and a handy checklist to help members take steps to engage with employees, colleagues and customers.

More businesses at risk of insolvency

More West Midlands businesses are standing at the brink of insolvency in the second quarter of 2017 than at any other time this year, according to a new report. This is despite national

Government statistics showing a sharp 15.4 per cent drop in underlying corporate insolvencies. New monthly research by the Midlands branch of R3 shows that more than one in four businesses in the region – 27 per cent – are now at higher than normal risk of becoming insolvent. R3’s August figures, compiled

using Bureau Van Dijk’s Fame database, highlight that this is equivalent to over 73,500 West Midlands companies and is in contrast to January’s figure, which was almost four points lower at 23.6 per cent. Of the key West Midlands

business sectors monitored by R3, hotels was the only sector to register a decrease in insolvency risk this month, albeit a marginal one of 0.04 per cent. Transport and haulage continues to be among the highest risk sectors in the West

Chris Radford

Midlands, with over a third – 35.5 per cent – of businesses at above average risk of insolvency. R3 Midlands chairman Chris

Radford, a partner at Gateley plc in Birmingham, said: “The 15.4 per cent fall in underlying corporate insolvencies in the last quarter was somewhat surprising, but it’s important not to read too much into such a sudden change in one quarter. Prior to this, insolvencies had been rising more consistently than they had done since just after the financial crisis. It is therefore vitally important for companies to continue to heed the numerous economic warning signs.”
