about their own experiences around mental health and how they recovered, which could be a powerful real life example.

Consider the impact of the working culture Does the organisation encourage good work-life balance? Do staff take their lunch breaks or full annual leave allowance? Are early starts and late finishes to the work day a sign of overwork or an employee struggling with their workload? Again a senior manager may be the person to encourage a better work-life balance in staff, but with a view to having a happier, productive employees.

Consider offering workplace counselling There are a range of different ways organisations can support their staff. Larger organisations may be able to employ a workplace counsellor or offer an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), where counselling can be offered at off-site provider. There are also options for smaller businesses, there are a number of dedicated, counselling services throughout the West Midlands or private counsellors with knowledge of the stresses that people experience at work, or understand how personal pressures can impact in

the workplace. A counselling service or private counsellor may offer a cost- effective alternative to a long-term staff absence.

Physical health issues can also impact on our mental health Remember there will often be a psychological impact when people are experiencing physical illnesses. So even when an employee is struggling with major illnesses such as cancer or more day-to-day conditions such as back pain their mood may also be affected.

Only by addressing organisational culture and providing practical ways to support staff through workplace counselling or stress awareness training is there a clear demonstration to staff that their mental health is important. Employers that encourage positive mental health are more likely to retain their staff, have lower rates of sickness and more productive, customer responsive team, which makes good business sense.
