Solihull Solihull Chamber Patrons
Transport plan approved
The Chamber is backing plans to introduce massive improvements to public transport in Solihull in the coming decade. The arrival of HS2 will herald large scale
infrastructure improvements, and also see the extension of the Midland Metro light rail system to the borough. In addition, there will be a massive revamp of
bus operations in Solihull, under a plan known as the Advanced Quality Bus Partnership (AQBP).
‘This scheme is good news for bus passengers in Solihull’
Most of the improvements are covered by a
transport blueprint that has been unveiled by the new West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). The plan is part of the authority’s long term
transport strategy ‘Movement for Growth’ and sets out what it calls ‘a high level programme of infrastructure projects up to 2026’. In Solihull, the plan will specifically include an extension to the Midland Metro light rail system
from Digbeth, through north Solihull to the proposed Birmingham Airport/HS2 interchange. At the same time, there will be major
improvements to M42 Junction 6, so it is ready for HS2 and the UK Central Hub development, which is a scheme to link everything of significance in Solihull together, including the airport, HS2, the NEC, Birmingham Business Park and Jaguar Land Rover. Cllr Roger Lawrence, lead member for
transport for the WMCA, said: “This scheme is good news for bus passengers in Solihull and something we are very keen to expand across the rest of the region. “Not only does it help tackle the hugely important issue of air quality by ensuring a minimum standard on engine emissions, it also ensures a smoother operation of bus services within the zone.” Solihull Chamber director Joan Smith said:
“Solihull Chamber is thoroughly behind these planned schemes. We have so much investment for the borough with HS2’s approval earlier this year, that it’s vital we get transport and infrastructure absolutely spot on.”
