A double win for tech firm’s Tom

Tom Charman has been named as a double winner in this year’s Future Faces awards. The 24 year-old entrepreneur has won the

‘Future Face of Technology and Innovation’ award, and is also the organisation’s ‘Future Face of Greater Birmingham’. Tom is the founder and chief executive of

technology firm Kompas, which is based at the Innovation Campus Birmingham at Faraday Wharf. Kompas makes a mobile phone and tablet app which is described as ‘a pocket guide to the world’s urban jungles’. The company is active in four cities at present,

and Tom’s aim during the next five years is to expand throughout the UK and Europe market, and into the US and Asia.

‘It is more important than ever that we support the development of our young professionals’

As well as expanding his own business, Tom’s

intention is to help others start and grow their own venture. In addition, he will act as an ambassador for Future Faces, which will involve attending events and speaking about membership of the organisation. Other winners of this year’s awards are: Amrit

Singh, freelance creative at MrASingh (Future Face of Arts and Culture); Daniel Bridgewater, Buckt (Future Face of Entrepreneurship); Mark Hipwell, CH2M (Future Face of Industry); Natalie Merrix, Rewired PR (Future Face of Sales, Marketing and Communications); Laura Ralfe, Irwin Mitchell (Future Face of Legal); Ruzwan Boota, Mazars (Future Face of Finance). A final winner is cocktail bar Aluna (Future Faces Venue of the Year).

A special award has gone to Greg Fearn (Mills

& Reeve), who has been named ‘Future Face Ambassador’. For winning this, he will act as an ambassador for Future Faces. Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce

chief operating officer Russell Jeans, who was chairman of the judging panel, said: “The volume and high calibre of applications received are a sign of how seriously the business community is taking these awards. “As a region it is more important than ever

that we support the development of our young professionals and one way of doing this is to recognise their efforts and achievements. “The Future Faces awards are a fantastic way

of doing precisely that.” The winners were revealed at Future Faces’

annual dinner and awards ceremony at Edgbaston Stadium on 15 September.

Access to inspiration at TedXBrum

Future Faces has partnered with TedXBrum to give members a 10 per cent discount off tickets to a conference on Sunday 15 October at the Hippodrome. The ‘TED’ initiative is based in the States and

has been running for 30 years. It began in 1984 as a California-based conference where technology, entertainment and design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Since then, the format has grown hugely in popularity and has featured a number of high profile speakers including Bill Gates, David Blaine, and Anne-Marie Slaughter. The not-for-profit organisation describes itself thus: “Now in its 30th year, TED has since grown 26 CHAMBERLINK October 2017

to become a universally recognised platform where pioneers of every discipline, background and culture present their awe-inspiring ideas and ground breaking findings through a series of talks.” Future Faces manager Anna Assinder said:

“I’m delighted to be partnering with TedXBrum and TedXYouth on their flagship events. This partnership allows Future Faces and the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce to give our members access to talks from inspiring thought leaders, talented performances and the opportunities to collaborate in order to help us shape the future of Birmingham.”
