Name: Jochen Schnadt

Company: bmi regional

Job Title: Chief Commercial Officer

What does your company do? Operate a fleet of 20x Embraer Regional-jets on a Pan-European basis connecting secondary business regions throughout Europe directly as well as connecting such business regions with major European Hubs such as Munich, Frankfurt, Paris CDG and Brussels.

How did it all start? Bmi regional has been operating for more than 30 years at this stage starting off originally as Aberdeen-based Business Air. Between 1994 and 2012 it was part of the British Midland Group when, following brief ownership spells by Lufthansa and British Airways, the business became independently owned by Stephen and Peter Bond in October 2012 forming part of the Airline Investments Limited Group comprising also of Loganair in Scotland.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Having successfully started a business as well as business units within a larger airline from scratch on-time and within budget and watching an idea become reality, taking off quite literally..

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Qutting a secure and well paid job in an European organisation to pursue my real passion in a highly entrepreunerial environment. Has it worked out? I have certainly never looked back questioning my decision back then.

What keeps you awake at night? Things I cannot control or at least influence.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Undertake more due-diligence on organisations/key people/objectives before starting some of the roles I have taken on during my career.

What has surprised you most in your job? The ability of a challenger-brand to develop a standing in its industry, which is way beyond its actual size.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Be clear on your objectives, know your strengths and weaknesses and be prepared to stand up for your views and convictions, especially when you precisely know your needs to achieve your objectives.

Which business do you most admire? Businesses or brands that are either successful in turning aspirations into healthy profits and such other businesses, where their brand has become synonymous with their product. Red Bull would be in the former category, Apple probably in the latter.

What exciting projects is your business working on? bmi regional is in the middle of redefining regional aviation in Europe, which is exciting in its own right, ploughing its own furrow. With this effort comes a myriad of exciting projects including the developments of new markets as well as the entry into the larger aircraft market in the foreseeable future and robust but sustainable growth as a whole.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We see our membership with the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce as an important enabler to embed our company better in the West Midlands region, effectively connect with customers and play an effective role in helping shape future developments of importance to this highly dynamic region.
