Jim’s Gardiner’s grandson Leo aged nine, poses on his

great-grandfather’s bike (Jim Gardiner).

Terry Gardiner raced at Brooklands in 1939 (Jim Gardiner).

of the most famous riders of the 1920s came face- to-face (or seat-to-seat!) with the famous bikes their grandfathers rode. First was Dale le Vack. His grandfather, Bert le

Vack, raced Indian V-twins at Brooklands before riding for Brough Superior. On the so-called ‘Works Scrapper’, he set the World Motorcycle Record in 1929. Accompanying Dale was David West, grandson of Wal Phillips (of motorcycle fuel-injector fame) who was a nephew and mechanic of Bert Le Vack. Completing the family group was Mark Birrell, Bert le Vack’s great grand- son who is the current 500cc Veteran Motocross Champion of Jersey. There seems to be a motor- cycling strand in the family DNA!

To add to the emotion, the Brough was fired up and Dale sat on it, revving the engine that had propelled his grandfather at 129mph at Arpajon in France. To complete the family experience, great grandson Mark Birrell was provided with riding gear and rode the 250cc Rudge of John Ferris in the afternoon session on the Test Hill. After his ride, Mark said, “It was very emotional, coming on to the Banking and under the Mem- bers’ Bridge and thinking what Bert le Vack had done. I didn’t think it would get to me quite like that, but it brought me close to tears”

Then there was Paul Denly, grandson of the fa- mous Norton and AJS rider, Bert Denly. Paul is also an active motorcyclist and looked very at home on the Brooklands ex-Pat Driscoll Norton now owned by Motorcycle Team member Roger Bird.

Last but not least was Tim Spring, grandson of Nigel Spring, a Brooklands rider on Nortons, who
