Classic Talks

On Thursday 18th January a team from TfL (Transport for London) will be with us. The subject is the £17-billion railway Crossrail, Europe’s biggest engineering project, set to transform rail travel across the capital. Our subject on Thursday 15th February, with the support of Lord March, is the history of Goodwood in the company of Harry Sherrard. Harry will take us on a journey of exploration of this world-famous estate. Other planned subjects are ‘John Cobb and the Kings of Speed’ – a look at the history of the Land

start with congratulations to Michael Sands and the entire Brooklands Motorcycle Team for delivering a wonderful event on Sunday 2nd July. To my mind, and others too, probably the best motorcycle show so far. The event goes from strength to strength so let’s hope that in 2018 it can be even better. We all know that our Members’ Bar can suffer

from a lack of space and an inability to maintain a reasonable level of service on busy event days. The Double Twelve weekend reflected that, although following problems encountered on Saturday the service on Sunday was greatly improved. We have to manage the situation as best we can in the circumstances. Following that weekend, a performance review meeting took place with CreativEvents, the Museum and the Brooklands Trust Members which highlighted some areas for improvement. It was agreed that at major events food orders would be taken until 3.00pm in an attempt to manage the demand over a longer period. We are also looking at providing an additional menu after 3.00pm. One notable complaint is the method by which food is ordered and allocated to a numbered table. The system cannot be altered and therefore it is important that you have your table number when ordering. Failing to provide it is the biggest cause of delay in being served at the bar. To assist we are in the process of making the table numbers clearer and providing numbered cards to take to the bar. A reminder of the order process will also be printed on the menu.

The Motor Sport Legends dates and guests for 2018 will be confirmed in the New Year. Finally, an apology. We had planned a tribute evening to the late John Surtees CBE to coincide with the exhibition of John’s collection of racing cars and motorcycles at Mercedes-Benz World in August, but we have been unable to find a suitable date. We feel it is better to postpone this event until early 2018. As ever, thank you all for your enthusiasm and support for the talks.

Allan Winn (left) and Derek Redfern at the Double Twelve – VSCC members will go to any length to gain extra points (Derek Redfern).

Finally, at the biggest events, a BTM representa- tive will be on hand to monitor and assist members and to identify and solve any problems. It is always good to finish on a high and I am delighted to say that we have now reached an agreement with the Museum that the ageing Napier Room audio/visual equipment will be upgraded to meet and exceed the growing needs of the BTM. This is a very welcome and important development.
