Le Mans adventure (Gareth Tarr).

telegraphed her mother to report news of the great result. Granny Rachael (as Charles referred to her) was not pleased and immediately summoned her daughter to return home. On return Prudence was given a dressing down and told she was never to race again, “Our class don’t do that sort of thing”. One wonders what Granny Rachael thought of Earl Howe, if she ever met him!

Prudence wanted to buy the Le Mans Morgan but mother refused, as well as an ex-works Aston Martin Ulster (which competed in the 1934 Le Mans race). She sold one of her Alfa Romeos to Leslie Trevelyan to whom she subsequently became engaged and on 1st April 1939 they were married.

During the evening Charles Trevelyan told some lovely tales about his much-loved family. Uncle Percy with his Bugattis was certainly a great character. He spoiled his daughter Enid who not only received a James Young-bodied Type 57 for her 21st birthday but also a diamond watch in the shape of a Bugatti radiator. Charles still owns this magnificent heirloom and he displayed it at the

talk. Another item in the collection was a water- colour painting of one of Uncle Percy’s Bugattis. In those days, the coach-builder sent the customer a painting of the proposed design for approval before the work began.

The formidable Granny Rachael featured

throughout the evening’s tales and must have been like one of Bertie Wooster’s Great Aunts. She favoured American cars due to their easy driving character (particularly the automatic gearboxes). At one time Rachael owned a Packard (registra- tion T 430, marking the time of afternoon tea) in which she had a significant accident, immediately leaving the scene and returning home in floods of tears. As a consequence she was summoned to court on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. The magistrate was her godson and fined her £5. She protested, threatening to write him out of her will, so he fined her a further £10 for contempt of court! They never spoke again. Charles Trevelyan is Chairman of the Bugatti Owners’ Club. He spent 25 years of his career in the Army before working for Autosleepers motorhomes. He is married to Angela who was a
