CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

News

or many of us involved with Brooklands the highlight of 2017 was the re-opening of the Finishing Straight during the Double Twelve Festival on Saturday 17th June, one of the hottest days of the year. For me there was an added personal piquancy as my grandfather saw the first and last races on the circuit in 1907 and 1939, and I am sure he would never have dreamed that in 2017 the beasts of yesteryear would again thunder along the Finishing Straight. Although a report appears elsewhere in this Bulletin, it would be remiss of me not to congratulate the Director and staff of the Museum for organising such a superb event and for gathering together such a remarkable and eclectic collection of vehicles to celebrate the re-opening. I am pleased to report that the Brooklands Trust Members have now raised sufficient funds to cover the cost of the Scoreboard, which was formally opened at the Brooklands Reunion on Sunday 13th August. This has been achieved through raffles, fund-raising activities and the recent Life Membership Appeal, which together took us to our target. Great credit to Robert Hall for his fund-raising efforts and to Julian Grimwade for masterminding the Life Member- ship Appeal – but of course the real thanks and praise is for members who have donated funds to the project or joined the Life Membership scheme – a big thank you to all of you.

F It is pleasing that the number of members 49

attending events at the Museum continues to rise, and the feedback received is overwhelmingly positive, although we accept that at busy events the queue in the Members’ Bar is still an issue. Steve Clarke has been working very closely with the caterers, CreativEvents, and new initiatives are being trialled to improve the situation. Steve set up our ‘Fast Track’ entry system for members, which has been a great success, and I know from feedback that it is greatly appreciated. We con- tinue to hope that with the new initiatives planned he can replicate that success in respect of service levels in the Members’ Bar. This is probably an appropriate opportunity to update you on the current position regarding BTM membership. Earlier this month our membership exceeded 6,000 for the first time, with over 2,500 at Club level. These are quite remarkable figures and comfortably exceed all our expectations. Although we have managed to hold subscription levels, when the Museum raises the cost of public admission later this year, inevitably we will have to consider the issue again, as the two are inextricably linked. This is obviously not the news that any of you want to hear, but we will ensure that any increase is as small as possible. The issue regarding Club level membership is more complex however. You may recall that shortly after taking over as Chairman, in 2014, I explained that jointly with the Museum we were keeping Club level membership under review, as it had risen far above our expectations. We were keen to ensure that we could maintain the levels of service and exclusivity that members at that level rightly expect, and one of the options was to introduce a cap on Club level membership. At that time this level of membership was heading towards 2,000 and in discussions with Allan Winn we agreed that we would not introduce a cap at that time, but would continue to monitor the situation. Club level continues to be the fastest growing tier of membership and, as I have reported above, the figure is now over 2,500, so inevitably we will have to revisit this issue over the coming months. We will discuss this at a Committee Meeting later in the year and I will of course report back to you in due course.
