The 2017 Oklahoma
State 4-H Horse Show was held June 22-24 and for the second year in the great Lazy E Arena in Guthrie. The boxing class had grown tremen- dously, with 43 entries. Youngsters really enjoyed the barbecue and ice cream social on Thursday. The show again received tremendous support from the horse industry, including many individ- ual trainers, and from AQHA OkQHA, and NRCHA.
The American QH Youth Association re-
cently announced that its national officers will be awarded scholarships at the Bank of America Youth Excellence Seminar, and that began in July with the 2016-2017 board. AQHA Executive Vice-President Craig Huffhines stated, “AQHA recognizes the incredible commitment and pas- sion these youth officers demonstrate throughout their year of service, and we are proud to reward their efforts.” Ty Cornelius, Mt Pleasant, AR, was among the outgoing board July 13, and he re- ceived a $500 scholarship for his 2016-2017 stint as AQHYA second vp.
Lost Horizon Ranch, Bryan, hosted compe-
tition July 15, and the 14-and-over division proved largest. Horse Show HP champions were Teagan Kallus (Novice), Leila Anderson (13&U), and Stephanie Pennington (14&O), and playday HP winners included Cheyenne Maples (8&U), Eryn Palacios (9-13), and Mariann Balcar (14&O). LHR’s next show dates are September 16, Octo- ber 7, and October 21, and is planning a Playday Trophy Winter Series. fmi,

AQHA’s Incentive Fund is being termi-
nated, and that was approved at the AQHA Exec- utive Committee’s July 2017 meeting. Foal nominations will not be accepted past 2018, and stallion nominations will no longer be accepted. With no more stallion nominations coming in, the fund should conclude in a few years, though the year of the last payout yet undecided. AQHA Treasurer and Chief Operating Officer Trent Tay- lor stated, “Preliminary examination indicates it will likely pay through the 2020 show season. De- pending on the breeding and foaling year, stallion

competition in Port Allen made for a busy day! Division winners included #8-Ranch Sorting plus the #8-w/3-Incentive-Ranch-Sorting (Chris Brian/Troy Rue), Incentive #8-Incentive-Ranch Sorting (Clay Hebert/Audrey Devalcourt), #15- w/7 Incentive 3-Man-Gate (Clancy Cleveland/ Dustin Johnson/Kimberly Jayro), and 15-w/9-In- centive-Team-Penning (Jamie Grezaffi/Jeanne Mock/Ronnie Horn).
American South Texas CHA’s July 15-16
shows, held in Brenham, lucked out with rain- storms to ease Saturday’s heat. Iris Baker, Drip- ping Springs, won the Youth circuit buckle, riding JM Peptomania. Josey Sikorski, Madisonville, earned the $1,000 Novice Rider circuit buckle, riding Gerry Gehring’s Yall Count On Me.
NM Paint HA’s July 15-16 Green Chile
Classic, held at Rocking Horse Arena in Stanley, was great, with lots of support from paint and all- breed exhibitors. Several classes drew over 10 en- tries, and the pizza evening and brisket dinner Saturday went over well! APHA HP champions included Judy Parsons (Open/Pistol Packin Pi- casso), Mary Novat (Am/Cash Is Good), Linda Marion (Nov-Am/A Country Pleasure), Brooke Burch (14-18/Lil Smarlena Gun), and Alyssa Waugh (Y-WT/Star of Eclipse). All-breed HP winners were Todd and Dottie Cleveland (Open/CJS Boonfish), Mariah Montoya (Open- WT, Y-WT/Zippos Lacy Pine), Suella Boyd (Am/Special Invitation), and Kansas Haddock (Youth/Saint Zip).
The National Day of the Cowboy event
held July 22 at the Hall of Fame and Museum in Amarillo and hosted by AQHA drew over 1,800 people. This year workers facilitated almost 200 rides, giving many youth the chance to ride a Quarter Horse for the first time. There were also

earned the title of Jr Division Champions at the Jumpers in the Hill Country August 12 show at Dripping Springs Ranch Park.
Cassie Argento Bird and Sparkle Valentine Iris Baker won the youth circuit buckle for American
cowboy poetry and stories read aloud, tours led by Charros (horsemen skilled in early Mexican tra- ditions), hands-on creative activities, and more. Activities and lunch were free to the public, thanks in part to the event’s underwriters, Bar H Ranch, Ford, KGNC, and Plastilite.
The American QH Hall of Fame unveiled a
new exhibit July 26, honoring Hall of Fame in- ductees that were honored during the AQHA con- vention this past spring. Five horses and 5 humans were inducted, including the late Marvin Barnes, Ada, OK, and Bobby Cox, Fort Worth. The spe- cial displays will stay up for a year in the HOF, and then the artifacts will be moved to permanent display cases. For information and biographies of the inductees, visit
