48TH Annual Louisiana 4-H And FFA State Horse Show


Louisiana’s 48th annu-


al 4-H and FFA State Horse Show was held July 8-12 at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales.


Every year, Premier Ex- hibitor awards are sponsored by the Gerry Lane Foundation


and given to participants who display a true knowledge of the horse program. Exhibitors are tested on skills and knowledge of horses through an exam, an interview, and a resume. Caitlyn Dionne, of Calcasieu Parish, won the title of 2017 Premier Ex- hibitor and received a $50 cash prize, a Premier Exhibitor jack- et, and a trophy buckle. Others finishing second through fifth in that competition received trophies and were Delani Lasseigne, Sarah Truett, Eden Robinson, and Amy Claire Boudreaux. Louisiana Equine Council presented $125 scholarship awards to all-around high-point champions. Timed events re- cipients were Bailey Gauthier (13&u) and Delani Lasseigne (14&o), and ranch events recipients were Isabelle Gonzalez (13&u) and Gabrielle Ryan (14&o). Western events champs were Riley Brumfield (13&u) and Gabrielle Ryan (14&o), while hunter events recipients included Cathryn Dionne (13&u) and Caitlyn Dionne (14&o).


Heather Dionne, from Calcasieu Parish, was honored as


LSU AgCenter Horse Leader of the Year. She has been an es- sential part of Calcasieu Parish 4-H program and has served as a horse project leader for seven years, participating in numer- ous club meetings, clinics, workshops and education tours. She has assisted 4-H members in Calcasieu and Cameron parishes to make the best better through their horse projects. Dionne is one of the founders of SOAR Therapeutic Riding, which offers a therapy program to disabled children and their families. She also is active with the Louisiana Equine Council. Each year, her group organizes a public stick horse rodeo during the South- west District Livestock Show and Rodeo. A Master Horseman graduate and a certified therapeutic riding instructor, Dionne organizes overnight trail rides for interested members of the horse project group with which she is affiliated. Many other award winners were recognized, with Senior


Division champions receiving $125 scholarship Premiums. Public Speaking winners Hayley Hillman (Jr) and Amie Lobo (Sr), and Individual Demonstration champs were Zoe Cazay- oux (Jr) and Jon Tucker Henderson (Sr). Vermilion Parish’s Kinsey and Shelby Buroker won Junior Team Demonstrations. Junior Quiz Bowl champions hailed from Lafayette Parish and were Hayley Hillman, Isabelle Gonzalez, and Hailey Privat. Richland Parish’s team won Open Quiz Bowl, and members were Isabel Dawson, Theadora Dawson, Camille Watts, Taylor Nolan, and C.J. Welch. w


Collegiate Reining Championship


The 2017 National Reining Horse Associa-


tion (NRHA) Derby hosted the Collegiate Rein- ing Championship on June 30. However the title of champion didn’t come easy, as it took a run- off to decide the winner for this year. Hannah Mitchell won the championship


with a score of 222.5 with The Boominator do- nated to the competition by James Hotz. Mitchell took the victory after a run off with Julia Spreng, who ended up Reserve Champion scoring 220.5 with HR Dun By Whiz owned by Randy and Sharon Reecer. Both com- petitors tied after their first runs scoring 217.5. Mitchell is a freshman at Oklahoma State University and is a native of Cuba,

Missouri. Spreng is a sophomore at University of Georgia majoring in Business. A native of Port Orange, Florida qualified to compete at the Collegiate Reining Championship through NRHA.


The Collegiate Reining Championship consists of 12 riders – four from the


National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), four from the Intercolle- giate Horse Show Association (IHSA), and four that are selected by the NRHA. This year, the riders selected from the pool of collegiate NRHA members were: Holly Lansidel (Southern Methodist University), Jaci Marley (Texas A&M), Ju- lia Spreng (University of Georgia), and Kyn- dal Harper (University of Georgia). The NCEA sent its top four reiners from the 2016-2017 season to the championship: Caroline Gute (University of South Carolina), Claudia Spreng (University of Georgia), Han- nah Mitchell (Oklahoma State), and Taylor Brown (Fresno State). Representing the IHSA were riders who placed in top four places in Open Reining at the IHSA Finals this year. Riders representing the IHSA were: Kristen Wesoja (Cazenovia College), Lauren King (Middle Tennessee State University), Mark Mowbray, and Mi- chelle McDowell (Grand Valley State Univer- sity). w
