Pinto Youth Development Program Young Horse

Generous AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders donate weanlings to this program each year.

AQHYA members can earn scholarships by raising a weanling from an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. Do you know a youth looking to earn scholarships and bolster his or her résumé? If so, tell them about the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program. AQHYA members have the opportunity to participate in hands-on horse training that will teach the fundamentals of horsemanship. Then they can showcase their learned skills and knowledge at designated events where they can earn scholarships and prizes through the AQHA Young Horse De- velopment Program. “The Young Horse Development Program was devel- oped to help youth gain hands-on experience in working with and training horses,” says Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “The program gives youth a mentor to learn from and showcase their hard work and dedication to their project. This will, in turn, give participants a skill set that will set them apart when applying for scholarships, college and jobs.”

For the project, accepted AQHYA members receive a donated weanling from an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breed- er. Youth who are not selected to receive a donated foal but are still accepted into the program will be able to purchase a weanling from a Ranching Heritage Breeder and participate in the Young Horse Development Program. From the wean- ling to yearling years, the AQHYA members work with and train their foals, then exhibit the foals at an AQHA-approved show. Ultimately, the project participants have the chance to win back their investment in their foals through scholarships. Generous AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders have al- ready donated weanlings to this year’s program. To receive one of these donated foals, free of charge, AQHYA members should submit application and waiver forms by August 15. Applications will be accepted until October 1. However, ap- plicants have a better chance of admission into the program and being matched with a foal in their area by applying by the initial deadline of August 15. Top Notch Equines Compete at the Pinto World Championship®

A wide array of Pinto horses, ponies and miniatures vied to be champions at

the 52nd Pinto World Championship®, held June 12 - 24 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock complex in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Exhibitors and their equines traveled far to earn an array of awards and world champion titles. This year the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square played

host to 1,300 Pintos and more than 2,250 exhibitors from 43 states and four coun- tries, including: Canada, Sweden, Denmark and Australia. This year, the PWC had over 30,000* judged class entries. Produced by the Pinto Horse Association of America Inc., the Pinto World Championship® showcased many disciplines for just about every type of equine, from: western pleasure, showmanship, barrel racing and much more. This year’s PWC was filled with great awards with an estimate of $260,000.

Awards included: Burns Saddlery saddles and bridles, Gist Silversmiths belt buck- les, rosette ribbons, trophies, Kensington products, Tioga Territory Jackets and tack trunks. Payouts for the 2017 PWC estimated to $17,000 awarded to Versatil- ity, Charity Walk/Trot and National Snaffle Bit winners. “We enjoy awarding top quality prizes to talented horses and exhibitors each

year,” said Darrell Bilke, PtHA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Our Corporate Partners step up to the plate each year with the awards we give out; we could not thank them enough.” Proving the Pinto World Championship isn’t all about equine competition, many special family-friendly activities were held during the two-week show in Tulsa, Okla. These included: the PWC Welcome Party Sponsored by Lopez Foods, with free food and drinks; the Youth and Amateur Ice Cream Social, PWC Costume Class and the PWC Dog Show. The show also hosted two receptions for Corporate Partners and the Red Hat Society. This year, the Challenged Rider’s Leadline class gave challenged riders a chance to win a world champion buckle in front of their family and friends. Over five proud world champions walked away with this year’s shiniest buckle from Gist Silversmiths.

As always we look forward to seeing our exhibitors at our next events. The

2017 Color Breed Congress will be held Novembr 3-11. The Mule & Donkey Congress Show will be held in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress. The 2018 Pinto World Championships will be held June 11-23. The Built Ford Live- stock Complex, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will host both events.
