Take a journey through Asia
Portico Gallery in Riverhead is launching an exhibition which will take you on a fantastic journey through Asia inspired by the recent travels of Kent artists Ann Bridges and Hugh Ribbans. For Ann and Hugh, “taking a sketchbook on holiday is as essential as a passport and sunscreen”. Drawing helps to embed their experiences in their memories, which they use to develop their artistic interpretations when they return home.
This exotic exhibition depicting Ann and Hugh’s extensive travels is a testament to their mutual interest in a great story and beautifully-detailed artwork. The exhibition runs from 9th
September-28th October, entrance is free and all works will be for sale, with prices from £75. The gallery is open Tuesday to
Saturday, 10am-5pm. • Portico Gallery, 25 London Road, Riverhead, Sevenoaks TN13 2BU, visit

Vicars fl ock to rock!
The sun shone on the righteous as crowds fl ocked to the fi fth Vicar’s Picnic music festival in Yalding. After years of distancing itself from the church, this year’s festival kicked off with a set from the village vicar Rev Paul Kish and his band the Devil’s Cut Combo. As the double bass-playing rocking Rev took to the stage, the clouds parted to reveal beautiful blue skies – the start to two days of
fantastic toe-tapping sounds, fabulous food, arts, crafts and comedy, plus a plethora of activities to keep the kids amused. New this year was the artist’s quarter, where festival laureate Matt Chamberlain headed an impressive list of local poets. Also new was the festival therapy site, offering massage, reiki, sound therapy and retail therapy! The festival attracted more than 3,200 people to the village and was supporting Maidstone-based charity Dandelion Time.
Latest thriller by award-nominated local author concludes trilogy The fi nal volume in Kent author Mark Oldfi eld’s acclaimed Vengeance of Memory
trilogy is out now. The Dead concludes the thrilling journey into the dark heart of Spain, which has gripped readers from across the globe.
Mark’s fi rst book, The Sentinel, received rave reviews from the national press and was shortlisted by the Crime Writer’s Association for its prestigious Steel Dagger Award for Best Thriller of the Year 2013.
As with the fi rst two volumes, The Dead alternates between two time periods. In the present day, forensic scientist Ana María Galíndez of the Guardia Civil continues her investigation into the crimes secret policeman Leopoldo Guzmán committed in the years following the Spanish Civil War. While in 1982 Comandante Guzmán has decided it is time to disappear. Franco is in his grave and there’s no place in the new order for the one-time head of the dead dictator’s secret police. As he looks for a way out, he fi nds his many enemies in Madrid have other plans for him. • The Dead, published by Head of Zeus, is available from Amazon and leading booksellers (hardback £20; Kindle edition £5.03).
