PROPERTY NEWS 121 Homebuilders need to provide multi-generational homes
John Elliott, Managing Director of Tonbridge-based Millwood Designer Homes, discusses the importance of homebuilders expanding into the market of multi- generational living, by offering families new homes with greater fl exibility. “With modern family life changing as younger generations save for a deposit of their own and older generations move back in with their children, multi-generational living is becoming increasing popular in Britain. “Recent research compiled by the NHBC
Foundation shows that more than 1.8 million households in the UK contain two or more adult generations. My understanding is that this signifi cant rise in recent years has been largely down to the number of adults over 25 who continue to live in the family home. Multi-generational living is becoming
more appealing to homebuyers due to the benefi ts it offers for all involved. As well as the social benefi t of living together, splitting bill costs, helping with childcare and providing support for older family members are amongst several pros to having more than one generation, living under one roof.
MORE THAN 1.8 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS IN THE UK CONTAIN TWO OR MORE ADULT GENERATIONS
“At present, only 16% of families believe their existing house would be suitable. I believe there is defi nitely an expanding
market for multi-generational homes, which more homebuilders should be tapping into. “At our bespoke Lavender Fields development in Isfi eld, East Sussex, we are currently selling a selection of large fi ve and six-bedroom family homes, which have been carefully designed to provide luxurious yet practical living spaces, ideal for modern family life. The layouts include self-contained areas such as private home- offi ces or workshops featuring kitchenettes and a WC and generously-sized bedrooms. “In other countries, multi-generational
living is recognised as improving wellbeing and contributing to an effective use of housing stock and the UK must follow suit. As homebuilders, we have been presented with an excellent opportunity to design new homes to suit a range of living circumstances.”
Exclusive new home for sought-after Beulah Road
Kent housebuilder Regalpoint Homes have recently achieved planning consent for a new home in Tunbridge Wells, The Lodge, situated on Beulah Road. This popular area (also known as the
St James’ area due to its close proximity to St James Church) is desirably close to all Tunbridge Wells’ attractions as well as the train station, wide-ranging shops and excellent schools.
After submitting planning permission for a
single-storey lodge house on a previously used brownfi eld site in March this year, consent was granted to Regalpoint Homes in May, meaning that building could commence anytime now. The Lodge will be a detached home with
more than 1,000sq ft and will include two double bedrooms, a large, open-plan living room and kitchen with bifold doors leading onto a patio garden designed by respected garden designer Lester Hewitt. The predicted end date for The Lodge is February 2018.

Kentish Castle Keep
For generations, Hadlow Castle and the nearby towering Victorian folly were among the most striking and romantic features of the Kent countryside.
While the original castle is long gone, the collection of Georgian Gothic houses in its grounds remain, with their crenellated battlements, honey stone and arched windows, and one of them – The Keep – is currently on the market. Commissioned by wealthy industrialist Walter Barton May, The Keep is one of a series of lodges built alongside the castle. Atmospheric and unique, the Grade ll listed house
features a spacious living room with an elegant, stone- framed fi replace, three bedrooms, compact and practical kitchen, bathroom and shower room. Outside, is a garage and small private garden, leading to the walled churchyard and communal gardens with the iconic Victorian folly, more than 200ft high, the tallest in England. • The Keep is on the market for £650,000 exclusively through Graham John.
