Twin town visit to Sevenoaks Following our recent feature on Tunbridge Wells’ twin town of Wiesbaden, reader Carol Oakley contacted us to say that as well as being twinned with Pontoise, Sevenoaks has also been twinned with Rheinbach since 1995. And to prove it she sent a photo of The Friends of Sevenoaks from Rheinbach on their recent visit to Sevenoaks, where they were greeted by the Mayor, Councillor Maxine Chakowa, her escort, Mr Chakowa, and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Roderick Hogarth.

Local borough councils in Tonbridge & Malling and Tunbridge Wells are inviting people to get their knitting needles out to back a knitted poppy appeal to commemorate Remembrance Day. Working in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, the councils – and the volunteer army of knitters – will create a spectacular carpet of knitted or crocheted poppies to mark the start of this year’s official RBL Poppy Appeal and to mark Armistice Day on 11th November and Remembrance Sunday on 12th November. It is hoped that community

groups, schools and individuals will join in to make as many poppies as possible for the displays around the county. Encouraging people to

take part, Tunbridge Wells Mayor Julia Soyke (pictured) said: “As the years go by, first hand memories of the two wars are receding and it is vital that we continue to remember and honour those who lost their lives or suffered terrible injuries.” The poppies can be any

size and follow any pattern. Some patterns for knitted and crocheted poppies available on the Royal British Legion website: http://support. britishlegion.org.uk/app/ answers/detail/a_id/1346/~/ knit-or-crochet-a-poppy Knitters in Tonbridge

• Larkfield Library, Martin Square, Larkfield ME20 6QW • Tonbridge & Malling Council offices, Gibson Drive, Kings Hill ME19 4LZ In Tunbridge Wells drop-

off boxes for donated poppies will be available in several locations including Tunbridge Wells Gateway and the Weald Information Centre. Knitted poppy displays need to be in place by 27th October, so there’s plenty of time to get knitting!

Where there’s a Will.....there’s an answer

The parchment Will of Sir Sydney Stafford Smythe, who died on 2nd November 1778, was found in amongst some old discarded papers at Tonbridge Lions Club’s waste paper store. Sir Sydney, son of Henry Smythe of Great Bounds Manor in Bidborough, entered St John’s College, Cambridge on 1st July 1721 at the age of 16 and went on to have a distinguished career in law. Tonbridge Historical

Society quickly answered the appeal for a suitable place for the Will to be stored – it will now remain in their archive at Tonbridge Castle. President of Tonbridge Lions, Gordon Hill, handed the document to the Chairman of Tonbridge Historical Society, George Buswell, along with some 19th century documents of indentures of property sales, which included some well-known local names such as Cazalet and Cheesman.
