Classic cars tour the county

Classic cars spanning more than 80 years take to the roads, plus September sees the 67 registration number plate & diary date

T

he fourth annual Classic Car Tour of Kent, organised by Tonbridge Lions Club, got underway at Tonbridge Castle as the Mayor of Tonbridge & Malling, Councillor Roger Dalton, waved the flag to set the 49 entrants on their way. The cars travelled through the varied and

picturesque countryside, stopping off for lunch at Barnsgate Manor near Uckfield, and then after lunch they returned via a different route to Tonbridge Castle where they were greeted by Lions President Gordon Hill and his wife Peggy. The drivers and passengers then enjoyed a cream tea in the castle grounds. The cars were a varied cross section of classics spanning over 80 years, among the oldest being a 1934 Lagonda 16/80, a 1934 Talbot AV 105, and a 1934 MG PA. Sponsors for the event were Martin & Co, Hadlow Stair Garage and Warners Solicitors.

DOING THE NUMBERS GAME!

Back in 2001 the DVLA updated the number plate system for the UK, bringing in two changes a year, which take place: March – the number plate represents the year – e.g. cars produced in 2017 have a ’17’ plate. September – the number plate represents the last number of the year prefixed by a six for September – e.g. cars produced from this month (September 2017) until February 2018 will have a ‘67’ plate.

Diary date

The final classic car meet of the season at 7 Hotel Diner takes place on Wednesday 6th September. Join the line-up from 6pm and get your photo taken for the Wall of Fame – and also receive 10% off your food bill! Be prompt as this last event of 2017 at this unique retro American venue in Halstead promises to be the best ever. • For more information, call 01959 535890 or visit www.7hoteldiner.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? • All standard UK registration plates are made up of seven characters. The first two letters are the DVLA memory tag (area code), the two numbers (the age identifier) indicates the age of the vehicle, and the last three letters are random yet distinguish each car from any other that might have a matching area code and age.
