Queen helps the Motability Scheme celebrate its 40th anniversary, plus car safety tips and diary date
T
his year marks the 40th anniversary of Motability, the charity that has provided a “road to freedom” for millions of disabled people and their families. To mark the milestone, the Queen, who has
been Chief Patron of Motability since its inception, hosted a ceremony at Windsor Castle where she presented five disabled people and their families with the keys to their new vehicles in front of 400 guests. Established in 1977 by Lord Sterling and the late
Lord Goodman, the Motability Scheme has provided 4.5 million vehicles to date. The Scheme has helped millions of disabled people maintain their ability to get to work or college, attend a medical appointment, meet up with friends and enjoy the freedom and independence that so many people take for granted.
The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair. • For more information, to request a Scheme information pack or to check your eligibility, visit

pet on board, our tips can help ease the stress and stop tempers flaring. • Check traffic reports before heading to popular destinations like seaside resorts and theme parks on warm days or bank holidays. • Be sure to always have some drinking water in the car. • There is no safe amount of time to leave a child unattended in a car and the dangers increase when the summer temperatures soar, so never leave a child alone – not even for just a minute while you pop into the shop.
• Never underestimate the power of a bag of sweets and a classic game of I Spy to keep children quiet. If all else fails, make sure to bring an iPad. • Dogs die in hot cars. Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. Many people still believe it’s ok to leave a dog in a car if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but it’s still very dangerous. A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it’s 22°, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47° within the hour.
