SPOTLIGHT ON HERNE BA 025Y BayFest 2017: all you need to know © Julie Blackmer


• 13th August (4pm-9pm). Jazz and Swing Fest on the Pier (free before 6pm then £5). Set on newly- refurbished Herne Bay Pier, this will be a jazz fest like no other, with the best views of the seaside you can get! The pier restaurants and micro pub will be open for meals and drinks.


• 15th August Sandcastle competition.


BayFest is a month of festivities and fun taking place from 5th-28th August. When Canterbury City Council handed the festival over to the local community of Herne Bay, wow…what a programme of events they came up with! Extending the event from two weeks to four, so many of the local groups have clubbed together to produce a programme of music, art, fun and culture for all.


• 5th August (5.30pm- 10.30pm). Reggae Night On the Pier – Ben Russell and The Charmers –


formed in 2010 and now one of Kent’s most high profi le bands. Authentic food available, fancy dress optional but there’s a prize on the night.

• 5th August (10am- 5pm). Help to create the largest painting in the UK for a Guinness World Record to cover the hockey pitch on Beacon Road. Celebrating the oldest ever fossil of the horse found in UK in Herne Bay.


• 5th August (12noon-1.30pm). Eaten Fish, an exhibition at Beach Creative of cartoons and a workshop.


• 6th August (12noon-5pm). Cartoon Festival – Live on the Pier Exhibition by professional cartoonists and fake news cartoons.


• 12th August. Carnival, starts 6pm, with fi reworks at 9pm.


• 17th August First of the Herne Bay Rocks Heats in the Prince of Wales. This long-standing and very popular event sees more than 30 acts performing in seven heats over seven different venues throughout the festival. The fi nals are held in the Kings Hall on 25th and then the grand fi nale is on 26th with the three highest scoring acts. The overall winner is awarded recording studio time, 100 CDs, and a professional photoshoot.


• 19th August Star of BayFest will be the South East Air Show, organised by BayPromo. Drawing


thousands of visitors to the town last year and now in its third year, this show promises to be bigger and better than ever. Thanks to local sponsorship, it will include favourites such as the Red Arrows, the


Eurofi ghter, Second World War memorial aircraft, including the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfi res and Hurricanes, and then be thrilled by state-of-the art aero technology in action. PS – don’t miss Dr Who’s Tardis on the pier!


• 20th August Classic Car Show. In its seventh year, with almost double the number of entries from last year, the show features hundreds of classic cars from 1900 to the present day. There will also be live music, retro market and for the children Punch and Judy with Pip the Clown.

• 25th August Finals of the HB Rocks competition in Kings Hall (7.30pm-11pm).


• 26th August Grand Finale of HB Rocks, at the Clock Tower Plaza, rounding off what promises to be more than a week of fantastic live music (12noon-9.30pm).


• 26th August Fireworks at dusk.


• 27th August Model Boat Regatta in memorial park (10am-4pm).


• 27th August Crabbing competition, Angling Club, starts 3.15pm.


• 28th August Finish of Flogging a Dead Horse – closing at 1pm for a UK record.


• 28th August HB Children’s Got Talent Show (2pm-6pm). On the Pier stage, a whole afternoon of singing, dancing, comedy, magic and music. Registration by 1pm.
