024 SPOTLIGHT ON HERNE BAY © Jack Peilow
Friends of the Clock Tower secured Heritage Lottery funding to completely restore the fi rst, free-standing clock tower. In its new plaza, the shining white structure straddles its Edwardian past and the 21st century, brilliantly lit up with laser displays at dusk. Pier Trust volunteers transformed the derelict pier into a vibrant visitor attraction receiving a Certifi cate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. The Pier Village has 30 white huts for start-up businesses to hone their skills selling quality products. The Trust is about to add a stage and wedding venue to the food court and children’s activities where the traditional helter-skelter stamps its image on the skyline. The ultimate goal is fi nding funding to build the pier out towards that tantalising pier head standing a mile out at sea. The HB Improvement Trust secured an
award from Peoples’ Millions to regenerate the foyer of architectural gem, the Kings Hall, from a dingy neglected area into a bright
art gallery where artists display and sell their work. New exhibitions go up every few weeks.

HERNE BAY IS A VENUE REGENERATING ITSELF – IT’S A REMARKABLY
DETERMINED LITTLE SEASIDE TOWN WITH REMARKABLY DETERMINED PEOPLE TOO
The stunning scenery has attracted many artists to Herne Bay and many galleries are springing up. The heart of this artistic renaissance is Beach Creative. Volunteers took on a derelict building opposite the main car park and created an artistic hub – a bright and lively exhibition area, workshops and meeting place,
playing a major role in the regeneration of the town. HB Museum, also run
by volunteers, attracts visitors and the Historical Society opened a Heritage Centre on Central Parade. Finally, the bronze statue
of Amy Johnson, the famous aviator, stands on the front, a memorial to a great pioneer whose plane came down offshore.
Herne Bay is a venue regenerating itself – it’s a remarkably determined little seaside town with remarkably determined people too.
