SAFETY PROJECT STARTS ON MARGATE HARBOUR ARM
A
project to install 220m of new hand railings at Margate Harbour Arm has been commissioned by Thanet District
Council officers. The scheme, which started this month, is anticipated to take up to four weeks, with businesses expected to continue trading during the works. During the same time period, eight wall-mounted lights will be
erected over the parking bays to improve visibility for pedestrians and vehicles.
Gavin Waite, Director of Operational Services at Thanet District Council, said: “The Grade II listed Margate Harbour Arm was constructed in 1815 as a safe haven for fishing and commercial shipping. “In recent years, however, the Harbour Arm has been redeveloped and is now a popular public area with art studios, cafes and bars.
“In light of this change, we are installing railings along the currently unprotected edge that maintain and enhance the character of the Harbour Arm. “We are also fi xing wall- mounted lighting above the parking bays to maintain public safety. We have worked with Historic England to ensure that the railings and lights preserve the historic character as well as improve public amenity and safety.”

Broadstairs campus set to close
Plans have been announced to cease Canterbury Christ Church University courses from its Broadstairs campus.
The move, which will take effect from September 2018, will see all courses relocate to Canterbury as part of a wider long-term plan to redevelop facilities at its main city base. According to the university, it has said that it will work with staff and students during the transition phase as it delivers the transfer of existing courses and creation of new ones within Canterbury. The University’s Broadstairs campus was
created in 2000 to provide access to higher education for local people. This has been successful with more than 800 students from the area currently studying at Christ Church. However, the majority of students from Thanet (650) are choosing to study at the main campus in Canterbury, with declining numbers (135) opting for Broadstairs.
