Practical fashion venture set for seaside launch
Council accolade for supporting forces
An award has been given to Canterbury City Council in recognition of its role in providing support and employment for former and serving armed forces personnel. The authority’s bronze accolade in the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, run by the Ministry of Defence, shows how it is open to employing reservists, veterans, cadet instructors and military spouses and partners. As the lead organisation in the local Armed Forces Covenant Board, the council works with other agencies and charities to
advise, help and support current and ex-armed forces and their families to get jobs, access training, fi nd accommodation, and fi nd and receive the support and services they need in the community. In addition, the council’s Military
Road offi ces host an advisor from SSAFA, the armed forces charity, every Friday between 9am-1pm. The council’s deputy leader and armed forces ‘champion’, Councillor Pat Todd, received the award and said he was proud the organisation was such a supporter of the Armed Forces.

A company specialising in a stylish brand of luxury hand warmers is set to receive its offi cial launch in Whitstable next month. Tess King, joint owner of the Muf Company, revealed she had been inspired to set up the business after refl ecting on her teenage fashions, as well as her partner Mark Shepherd, who makes the trendy accessories. “Beyond fashion, Mufs are a statement of style. Flamboyant velvets are mixed and matched with practical waxed cottons to offer a range of individual character pieces,” explains Tess, adding: “We have sourced British tweeds, both traditional in classic dyed wools, and funky urban designs that incorporate contemporary refl ective fi bres.” The venture receives its offi cial launch on Saturday 16th September at the Show Off Gallery in Harbour Street, Whitstable. As the entrepreneur explained, the business has been set up as an online venture, though will also be operating on a pop-up basis at their launch venue. Tess said: “In a break with history we decided not to use animal skins, our aim is to avoid animal cruelty. These products are designed for men and women, and Mufs offer practical and beautiful solutions to keeping your hands warm on a chilly summer evening, or a cold winter’s day. They feature one or two large pockets, lined with luxurious durable ‘peace’ silk, making them ideal when rushing around a city, shopping, commuting, dog walking or any outdoor activity. “We support British industry as our Mufs are lovingly made in the UK, furthermore all our suppliers are based in the UK – for example our luxury Muf boxes are made by a British company that is supported by a Dragons’ Den entrepreneur,” added Tess. • Visit
