SPOTLIGHT ON HERNE BA 023Y
Herne Bay: The New Visitor Destination on the Kent Riviera
With wooden beach huts, a beautiful shingle beach and Neptune Harbour, a famous pier and smuggling past – not to mention a packed month ahead of exciting events and goings on – there is so much to do and discover at this vibrant Kentish beach town

erne Bay is changing fast. The rather sleepy, neglected little town of a few years ago is blossoming into a lively, vibrant visitor
attraction. People in town are talking about it and a new spirit and pride is emerging. What is so remarkable is that so many
residents have organised themselves into active groups and that these groups are able to work together towards a common goal – regenerating their traditional seaside town. Herne Bay is striking up a new conversation with day trippers this summer, in a campaign called ‘Hello Herne Bay’. With an aim to attract new visitors from wider Kent and beyond, the town is proactively showcasing its attractions and telling the South East the reasons why Herne Bay is rising fast in Kent’s day trip
stakes. As Herne Bay confi dently carves out its own identity along the Kent coast, it’s quickly becoming a popular spot from those wanting a fun and friendly day trip. Canterbury City Council’s Head of Business & Regeneration Caroline Hicks said: “Herne Bay is one of the forgotten jewels in Kent’s crown and it is time we put the town back on the map. With everyone’s help we will add to the already growing buzz about the town’s future.”
Bring on BayFest! One outstanding result of the diverse organisations working in harmony will be the August 2017 BayFest – a month-long festival run by the people for the people. The town has taken over the festival extending it from two weeks to four and BayFest will include a carnival and the heats and fi nals of the Herne Bay Rocks bands’ competition, an established and popular
event. The highlight of the festival is the Air Show run by one of the town’s leading groups, BayPromo, which last year really put Herne Bay on the map when thousands came to watch the spectacular air display. Bayfest will also include: • A Jazz ‘n’ Swing Festival • Classic Car Show • Cartoon Festival • Three fi rework displays • Art events • A children’s talent show, run by Radio Cabin • A reggae and blues night • There will also be a shot at a Guinness World Record with the biggest picture ever in the UK – Flogging a Dead Horse – covering the whole of the hockey pitch.
Keeping history alive Volunteers have spearheaded other ambitious projects to restore parts of the town’s heritage.
