Curriculum Enrichment Week 2017
Curriculum Enrichment Week (CEW) is an annual event which takes place during the last week of the summer term.
During CEW pupils in each year group in the Senior School (apart
from Years 11 and 13) are taken off the normal timetable and given the opportunity to try an activity that is new, exciting and perhaps something that they would not normally undertake.
CEW Year 12
On Monday 4 July, Year 12 set off on an action packed two-day whistle stop tour of London as part of CEW, writes Assistant Head of Sixth Form Darren de Bruyn.
First stop was the Globe Theatre where we learnt about the life of Shakespeare and all the entertainment provided to the masses in London during the 16th century. We then set off on a brisk walk along the Thames to the Houses of Parliament where we saw both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. After that, we crossed back over Westminster Bridge and jumped onto the London Eye. It was fantastic to see how imperial London meets the modern age as Victorian buildings rub shoulders with glass-covered skyscrapers. Back on terra firma, we caught a bus and headed towards the Tower of London. Students had the opportunity to learn about middle- aged history as the story behind the Tower was chronologically mapped out. The weaponry was impressive and the ultimate highlight was being so close to the crown jewels.
At this point our students were in need of some 8
sustenance, so we stopped off at Pizza Express to share a bite. Then it was off to the West End to see ‘School of Rock’. This was a truly outstanding performance that certainly got our students singing along.
The next morning, we set off to Regent’s University where we enjoyed two lectures that focused on entrepreneurship and the changing technological landscape. Both lectures were thought provoking and insightful and offered our students a first-hand experience of what university study will be like in the near future. Our final stop was the Imperial War Museum where students were exposed to all the trials and tribulations of WWI through to WWII with part of the Museum dedicated to the Holocaust. This was a fantastic opportunity for Year 12 to move beyond the walls of the classroom, forget about the curriculum and see another side of education. Students were given the flexibility to explore different sites and features in their own way as local tourists. Ultimately, the London trip was eventful, busy and exciting, just the way young adults like it.
