Enriching visit to Aston Martin

As a school, we continuously try to develop and enrich our curriculum by offering students opportunities to extend their learning.

In June, therefore, a group of pupils from across Years 7 to 10 were given the opportunity to visit the Aston Martin Headquarters in Gaydon. Year 10 pupils Ethan and Shae take up the story: “We had a tour of the factory floor and saw the four main stages of manufacturing an Aston Martin. We learnt the individual engineering processes, and how Aston Martin pays so much attention to detail - with many of the processes being completed by hand by teams of skilled engineers. “We learnt how Aston Martin name their cars, with the Zagato being named after the Italian engine manufacturers and the DB range coming from the initials of David Brown – the original owner of Aston Martin. “Seeing the factory in action, it was easy to see why they only manufacture 28 cars a day, compared to 1,000 in Oxford’s BMW/Mini factory!

“Highlight of the visit was being able to sit in a Vanquish Zagato - one of only 99 in the world and worth £550,000! “We each left with an Aston Martin badge which every employee wears ... and wanting to own an Aston Martin!”

Careers Fair

Sibford recently hosted a Careers Fair to give pupils in Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to meet employers face-to- face, find out about future vacancies and learn about apprenticeships.

Sibford pupils become moth-ers!

Sibford School pupils and their parents stayed up late on Friday 23 June to discover more about the wildlife that shares the school campus. For one night only the school ran a ‘Moth Evening’ … giving students and parents the chance to prepare and set special traps in order to catch and identify individual species. Cath Harding, Head of Science at Sibford said: “Once it got dark we discovered that the campus is a real moth playground. Everyone got really involved in trapping and identifying the moths and in the morning when the traps were re-opened there were over 200 macro moths including an Elephant Hawk- moth, a Muslin Footman and a Spectacle. “We also spotting a number of bats swooping over the pond. It was a wonderful opportunity to be outside and appreciate some of nature’s beauty.”

The evening event was led by Andy Newbold, a former teacher at Sibford who has a special interest in wildlife.
