STEM Week

In the first week of term, all Junior School pupils took part in STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Maths) Week.

They were encouraged to adopt a resourceful approach to learning and took part in design, investigation and testing challenges.

Highlight of the week was a special workshop led by Science Oxford which involved looking at animal adaptation and evolution.

Sibford book thieves!

This term Year 8 English students have been reading ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak, writes Cate Mallalieu-Needle. This is a challenging book about life in Germany during World

War 2 and is about the friendship that develops between a young German girl and a Jewish boy. Most interestingly, the book is narrated by death!

Quaker visit

Paul Parker, Recording Clerk for Quakers in Britain, visited Sibford School in Oxfordshire recently as part of a tour of Quaker Schools.

Paul met with Sibford Head,

Toby Spence, together with senior staff and pupils, to discover just what makes Sibford special.

Commenting afterwards he said that, having been told by staff that the warmth of the community and relationships were at the heart of the Sibford ethos, he was delighted to receive the same answer when speaking with

Sixth Form students. Paul Parker is pictured above with Toby Spence.

After reading the book, the students then ‘stole’ ideas to created their own version of this classic work of literature. They found interesting quotations and themes which were then added to the painted books that they had made. New titles were created based on their favourite quotation.

It has been fantastic to work with this group of talented and creative students.

Once upon a time

Since half-term, the topic for Foundation children has been ‘Fairy Stories’.

They have discovered that many fairy tales have changed over the years and were encouraged to compare different versions. As well as reading and discussing the stories the children painted their favourite fairy tale characters, which range from ‘The Ugly Duckling’ to ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, and, after hearing the tale of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ they also planted their own beans in the Junior School gardens.
