Pupils prepare pack ups

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Sixty intrepid Sibford Year 9 and 10 students did their final expedition for Bronze over two separate weekends. They were accompanied by three members of staff and one very brave parent (Dan Rogers).

Our students completed a variety of projects along their routes, walking from Oxhill to Wardington via Horley campsite. They explored the wildlife of Oxfordshire, discovered the history of the Churches, and took some amazing photographs as they researched the English Civil War. They also journeyed along a whole variety of Oxfordshire highways and byways ... not all of which were planned! However, they carried all they needed to survive for two days walking and camping, and at the end of it parents retrieved some very happy, if tired and slightly sunburnt, teenagers.

When pupils leave school for the day for enrichment trips we normally send them off with a picnic lunch.

But when Year 3 visited The Rollright Stones as part of their history topic they had to make their own pack ups! It wasn’t, however, because the kitchens wouldn’t provide them with anything. Instead the children made their own butties as part of their DT topic of preparing sandwiches for an event.

Mock election When the country went

Ollie, Alex, Dan, Ben and Ajay set off for their practice Gold Expedition in the Lake District at the start of the summer holidays. This is the first time we have run a Gold Expedition. Toby Spence is a Mountain Leader which now enables us to lead trips in ‘wild country’.

The group spent the first day doing micro navigation, this consisted of navigating from point to point using compasses and bearings which proved quite tricky in the moorland landscape we chose to practice on.

The next day was the practice proper, where the boys hiked to Side Farm campsite, a wonderful site by the lake. The view over Ullswater was spectacular.

Day three proved more challenging for both the boys and the staff ... who decided that they would meet the group on a ‘crossroads’ between two mountains. It was a wonderful sight when they finally saw the intrepid quintet climbing the mountain to meet them! The boys had, by that time, completed a height gain of 600m with large backpacks containing all they needed for four days camping.

11

to the polls on 8 June, Sibford pupils joined in too. A mock election was staged with students having to decide between six parties based on their key priorities and proposed policies on education, economy, health/care and foreign/ defence. However, there was a

twist! The parties were anonymised so the voters had to really read the manifestos to make their choice rather than being influenced by the name of the party.

When returning officer,

Toby Spence, announced the results in Meeting it was revealed that the Green Party had won with 26 per cent of the vote.
