hi-viz quiz
Daylight in Summer is the same as daylight in Winter!! It just lasts longer………
Nicky Fletcher, Managing Director of Equisafety, continues: “Another misconception exists with regard to the colour fluorescent yellow. It’s important to note that this colour does not ‘fluoresce’ at night. In fact it needs the daylight to ‘glow’. “Car and lorry drivers do not differentiate between summer and winter; if they are not able to see you in winter then they won’t be able to see you in the summer. So, if you and your horse wear a hi-visibility apparel while riding out in darker months, please keep wearing it throughout the summer too. “Not many people realise, whether they’re horse riders, cyclists, runners, dog walkers etc., that it’s the reflective piping/strips that reflect the headlights, whereas hi-viz (fluorescent) colour only increases visibility in dull/dark conditions if the cars have ultra violet light in their headlights - which very few do. “However, hi-viz has its place and can help increase visibility in dull light, or even normal light where people glimpse it and slow down in preparation. It can also be useful if you’re in an area with low flying vehicles - as they can see you and then try and avoid coming too close.
“However, many people ride out in the dark thinking they are safe because they have their hi-viz exercise sheet, waistcoat and bright yellow hat band on. However, if these items do not have a significant amount of reflective piping/panelling, you will not show up any further in advance than you would by standing in front of the car headlights.”
The concept behind hi-visibility apparel is that it has been designed to make the wearer fluorescent during the day and reflective at night. With safety in mind these items are made from a variety of fluorescent colours with added shapes and reflective strips. This makes it easier for pedestrians and drivers to see you in most weather conditions. However it is still difficult for drivers to see you in rain, dull, foggy or sunny weather. To be seen at night by drivers you will need to wear something that is also reflective, both on yourself and your horse. The correct hi- viz can help drivers see you and your horse three seconds sooner ,which could save both your own and your horse’s lives!
So, believe it or not, it is just as dangerous to ride out on the road in summer as it is in winter.
How to stay safe while riding on roads
1. Riders/horses should wear high visibility apparel (reflective and florescent) when riding on or near roads. 2. Ensure you are able to control your horse before you venture out. 3. Check your tack. Is it in good condition and does your saddle fit correctly? 4. Young/nervous horses should be ridden by a proficient rider and ridden out with other horses who are less nervous and/or more experienced. 5. Always, always wear your
riding hat. Make sure it is in good condition and conforms to the latest standards. 6. Carry your mobile phone with you in case you need to call for help. Can you get hold of it quickly? 7. Young/inexperienced riders should be accompanied by an adult/experienced rider. 8. Be courteous to drivers who slow down and thank them for doing so.
