Helene and Mr Morse, her ex-eventer and “such a dude”.

enjoys tea and cakes and we laugh a lot, recruit new members and network – the amount of people and effort that goes into creating these things is a massive team effort. Overall I love helping people get the most from their horses and seeing our many volunteers delivering so many educational events. Our current chairman Dr Derek Knottenbelt is an inspiration, as are our committees – we have 13 regional committees, one Scottish one and access and training committees too!” Success means different things to different people and for Helene; “Seeing the Scottish Code of Practice for the Welfare of Equidae published in 2009 was a huge highlight, as BHS Scotland wrote the first draft and Scotland led the way in equine code production for the whole of the UK.

“Then there was representing BHS as part of a British Equestrian Trade Association trip to promote British Equestrianism at the Kentucky Rolex in 2003. That was such a privilege - I will never forget the smell of the ‘blue grass country’ or seeing the racehorses at Keeneland at dawn! “This might sound a bit smarmy but every time I help a rider or owner, perhaps by opening up their hacking, making them safer on the road, introducing

them to their local accredited professional coach or BHS approved centre, or even simply catching their pony for them, it is another highlight!” Like all of us, Helene enjoys time with her horse and says; I currently have the ‘best horse in Scotland’ Mr Morse (Just Morse – he was quite well known in his day and he has retired to be my very smart hack). He is a 17-year-old, 16.3hh ex eventer and such a dude. He is a therapy horse, as after a long day struggling with BHS matters and emails, he takes me down the river and for a smart canter home; he is heaven actually.” When it comes to regular equine tasks away from the office, Helene’s are pretty much like everyone else’s and include poo- picking and feeding Morse, who lives in at night in the winter and is stabled during the day in summer. Looking to the future and setting the odd goal or two, Helene explains;” I keep on riding and running (you could not survive in my role without an ‘outlet’, but I am very slow!) and its good that the BHS continues to grow in Scotland. For the future my vision is for us to have our own offices and at least double the membership. A bit of work life balance would be welcome too - never thought I’d say that!
