competition news Top Newcomers ticket for Rachel and B Valeree

With a bumper field of horses and riders descending on Weston Lawns Equitation Centre, Rachael Conner had to put in a top class performance with B Valeree to secure a win in the Connolly’s Red Mills Senior Newcomers Second Round. A marathon 117 combinations were all hoping to claim one of the two qualification spots on offer for the Connolly’s Red Mills Senior Newcomers Championship Final, which will be held during this October’s Horse of the Year Show and it proved, as expected, to be a competitive class. The first two rounds saw the competitor numbers dwindle, with just nine booking their place in the jump off. Rachael Connor travelled from Rossendale in Lancashire with her 11 year-old mare, B Valeree and made the journey worthwhile when securing the top spot with a treble clear. As the penultimate combination to tackle the newly shortened course, this partnership used their speed and accuracy to full effect as they knocked over two seconds off the time and left all the fences standing to come home in 37.60 seconds. Taking second place was Rebecca Marsh from Warrington in Cheshire riding I’ve Got The Key, a 7 year-old gelding owned by Heathcroft Stud. This pair put up a strong challenge and crossed

the finish line with a treble clear in 39.88 seconds.

The riders and horses that finished in third to sixth took home tickets to compete in the Connolly’s Red Mills Senior Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.

Games success for Cumberland Farmers Hunt South

The Cumberland Farmers’ Hunt (South) Games Team qualified for the Northern Zone Finals after a spectacular second place at the Area 2 event earlier this season.

As a warm up for the Zone Finals the team competed at Bramham International Horse Trials against other branches from Morpeth, Tynedale, Bramham, Badswarth and York & Ainsty. They had two fantastic days of competition finishing 5th, 4th and 3rd. The team of Holly Veitch on Bubbles,

and Turnout’. After a shaky start, they then made five finals, finishing second in two; the very technical ‘Litter Race’ where each rider has to pick up a plastic bottle from the floor with a stick and transport the bottle to a bin all at a very fast gallop, and also the ‘Five Flag Race’ where each rider takes a flag, gallops to the end of the arena places the flag in a cone and picks up another flag to hand to the next rider. Their other finals were

in the Pole Race, Tack Box and Pyramid. The team will carry on training in the hope of picking up one of the two remaining HOYS places, which are decided at the Pony Club Championships in August at Cholmondeley Castle. In preparation for this they will be competing at the Lowther Show this month (August 12th & 13th). Team Trainer Fiona Veitch will be perfecting techniques at the next practices before these championships.
