Our tester, Caroline Powell, says: A high quality product with heavy duty hook/loop fastenings that secures the Airmesh material around the leg. There is a back seam which holds the boot in place and moulds down the fetlock for a neat fit. The mesh fabric breathes so the legs don’t sweat under the boot, while the Vamoose fly repellent technology seems to do its job very well, as the horse flies are pretty potent here and the horses going out with a Rug, Mask and Boots have quite a peaceful day! Also ideal for horses that get buttercup burn and sunburnt legs. Easily washable too.
NAF: Deet Power Performance Spray & Gel

Our tester, John Collier, says: Buy, buy, buy!! These products really work and do everything they say on the packet and more beside. I have been using the gel on a school pony that rubs himself raw, even turned out in a fly rug. Using this product before turning him out has allowed him to go out in comfort and not suffer. The results have been really impressive and have resulted in a wonderful improvement in the pony’s welfare. I used the spray on the horses before competitions at Warwick in that hot ‘fly’ weather to good effect. I was also impressed with the product while competing at Alnwick Ford, where it gave those Border mosquitoes a run for their money. Definitely a premium brand to keep in the wagon and on the yard.

technology. Extremely durable textilene body, soft polyester ear material, comfortable fleece edging with Vamoose technology for the ultimate protection against flies and the damaging effects of sunlight.
The company says: Our most effective and long lasting flymask. Treated with our Vamoose®
Oatmeal/Black or Silver/Navy & Silver/Purple. Small Pony, Pony, Cob & Horse. RRP: £39.95

Our tester, Caroline Powell, says: Anything from this company is usually of high standard and this did not disappoint. It’s a bit of a monstrosity when it first comes out the package but when you eventually get the heavy duty hook/loops undone it develops into a frame which very cleverly gives the horse the feeling of space around its face. Fits tightly under the jaw so there is no chance of flies getting inside the mask and is easily adjustable to make it a snug fit. My horses were a bit wary of it to start with and then certainly didn’t want to venture out without it on when they got use to it. Treated with Vamoose fly repellent and has a detachable nose cover which I can’t believe you would want to take off. A TURNOUT MUST!
Harrison Howard – CareMaster Fly Mask with Ears
Nettex – Summer Fly Cream
The company says: Containing skin moisturisers that help to keep skin soft and supple and prevent it from drying out. In addition, this practical product contains lanolin and glycerine which provide a barrier against adverse weather conditions, maintain skin suppleness and is rapidly absorbed to offer long lasting repellency from insects, flies and biting midges. And it’s safe to use if you’re out competing. Plus, it can be used around more sensitive areas, such as the eyes, nose, ears, muzzle, dock, sheath and teats – all areas that flies love to attack. 600ml. RRP: £9.15.

Our tester, Pippa Hahn, says: Taking into account the almost constant wind we have had over the past month or so it has been difficult to truly assess the effectiveness of this product. However recent calm conditions caused swarming flies and these have been really bothering Winston, so daily generous applications of the cream and he was settled and happy to graze.

The company says: Made from durable nylon and featuring an eye guard, which keeps the mask away from the face and also prevents rubbing. There are adjustable rear and nose closures. The dense panel over the eyes keeps the horse away from irritating mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies and midges, yet still allows the horse full-vision.

FLY MASK
Available in Black or Silver With or Without Ears/Nose
UV
60% UV Blockage Bug-Safe & No-Rubbing Machine Washable & Durable
Our tester, Peter Bulman, says: Very pleased with this mask. First impression was that it looked a bit fragile, but wrong impression! It is made from (as it has proved to be) tough materials yet is light (both in colour and weight). The vision through it is great – I tried it! Easy to put on yet not easy for it to be rubbed off during their rolling and it is easy to clean off the resultant dirt et al after this rolling. ‘The boys ‘sparred’ with each other over the fence and tugged away at the nose piece thus managing to drag it off (undamaged though) - so the nose piece was cut off, ‘just in case’- easily done without any other structural damage.
