Annual football match in memory of Charlie
A TRIBUTE match at the county town’s football ground is set to be- come an annual event in memory of Aylesford footie fan Charlie Girling (pictured). The youngster, who died in July
last year at an international jam- boree in Finland with fellow Scouts from Aylesford, was a keen sup- porter of Maidstone FC. With the support of Char- lie’s family, a match that took place at Christmas is now set to be re- peated each July as a celebration of his life.
It is being organised with the help
of Charlie’s schoolmates at Maples- den Noakes in Maidstone. Head teacher Richard Owen will be among those turning out on Satur- day, July 1, for the first game be- tween teachers and leaders of Aylesford Scout
Group.Year 7 and 8 students from Charlie’s school will also play. MrOwen said:“We’d love to raise
a significant amount towards the new Scout hut atAylesford inmem-
The Maplesden Noakes school council on the site of the memorial garden
ory of Charlie.” At the school, work is about to
start on a memorial garden. Mr Owen said: “This will be a reflective place for students, looking out over the Medway River Valley, almost opposite the stadium, so on a good day, you can hear the crowd where Charlie spent many happy hours supporting his team.” Charlie’s Gardenwas designed by
the school council, which has al- ready received £5,000 from Tesco charity tokens and £1,000 from Golding Homes. Landscaping work
should be complete before the sum- mer is out. It will include 270 trees, from the Woodland Trust, which will be planted by students. Mr Owen said: “Charlie’s family intend putting a bench in his memory there.” Gates open on the charity football
match at the Gallagher stadium in James WhatmanWay, at 1pm, with the kick-off at 1.30pm. Tickets are £5 for adults and £2 for children on the gate. Supporters, friends and family of the students, the school and the Scout group arewelcome.

MONEYwill be spent on a danger- ous junction at Eccles following a public protest. Villagers, and both borough and

“KCC through their actions have acknowledged that it is this sup- port that has made the difference, as there are many other dangerous junctions elsewhere in the county that also need attention.”
