News Nesting birds

hit lock work A PAIR of nesting grey wagtails have caused a flutter among boaters on the River Medway by delaying repair work at East Farleigh Lock. Work came to a halt on part of the

£3.5m scheme after the birds built a nest and raised a family. They have now left the site, but

the refurbishment, already delayed to the end of June, has now been set back until July 21. River Medway Boaters posted on Facebook: “Work is going at full pace and the lock should open to navigation on July 21.” The Environment Agency (EA) scheme suffered a major setback when a structural problem was un- covered in a large section ofwall be- hind a lock gate, resulting in a three-month delay. An EA spokesman said: “We un- derstand the impacts of the delay is having on the boating community and apologise for the ongoing in- convenience.”

Former mayoress loses her bale with cancer

FORMER mayoress of Maidstone, Christine Ash, has died, aged 73. Mrs Ash (pictured), who had worked as a primary school teacher, was remembered as a “positive, thoughtful and kind” woman who looked for the best in everyone. Manyfriends and family members attended her funeral at the Holy Cross Church in Bearsted, where she lived, on May 22. MrsAshwas mar- ried to the former mayor and current Bearsted parish councillor Richard Ash for almost 50 years, and they had two sons, Stephen and Ian. Ian said: “Her passing leaves a

huge hole in all of our hearts. Hers was a prime example of how to lead your life to the fullest. She was al- ways positive, looking for the good in everyone, thoughtful and kind, she will be sorely missed.” MrsAshwas born to Roy and Flo-

rence Peplow in Worcestershire in 1944 and spent her early years in Redditch, attending Redditch County High School. Her brother Keithwas born when she was 12, and she took on a very

1974, where they remained. Mrs Ashwas an active member of

the community andwas proud to be mayoress in 2007/8, when Mr Ash took the chain of office. She was an active member of the

WI, enjoyed long walks across the Downs and book club meetings. MrsAshwas also remembered by

motherly role, playing an important part in his formative years. She left Redditch in 1962 to study geography and geology at the Uni- versity of Sheffield, where she met Richard. She graduated with hon- ours in 1965, before embarking on a teacher training course. The couple were married in 1967,

and moved first to Hornchurch and then to the Maidstone area. MrsAsh taught at primary schools including Harrietsham, Wrotham and Ulcombe andWalderslade. The couple settled in Bearsted in

her family as a “devoted and loving grandmother to her five grandchil- dren”. But in March last year, shewas di- agnosed with oesophageal cancer which she fought, according to son Ian, “head on, as only she could”. He added: “She had an extremely positive outlook with her only thoughts being for glamour and the need to live life to the full. “Ultimately, however, the cancer

won, and she passed away at the Heart of Kent Hospice on May 12. “The last few days were very peaceful and shewas surrounded by her many family and friends. She would have insisted I mention that the staff and their care were won- derful and most appreciated.”
