Town Talk Call for parking changes

BUSINESS owners in Snodland are complaining about the lack of parking in the town which is caus- ing shoppers to go elsewhere. Parking in the High Street is re- stricted to 30 minutes. The High Street end of the Rocfort Road car park has 14 spaces and restricts parking to one hour. The long stay car park is free and allows maxi- mum parking of 23 hours in a day. Leane Harker, owner of The Vil-

lage Optician inHolborough Road, said: "The car park is always full of people working in London or at the water company. "It is easier for shoppers to nip to

Tesco, where they can park easily. It has been suggested that parking charges in the town could put an end to this problem. “Free parking for the first hour

and then charging after that has been suggested. The town needs to encourage shoppers to visit. Parking causes a lot of tension amongst locals.” Steve Still, director of Petaholics

in the High Street, said it had be- come a serious issue. For the few remaining small businesses, there is nowhere for customers to park. Steve says action needs to be

taken before shopkeepers lose those customerswho have to drive into the town. He added: "We have quite a few customers who travel long dis- tances to buy products not sold elsewhere, and while here they fre- quently use other local businesses.

Carnival and parade saved

SNODLAND Carnival has been saved! The news follows a town council report it would not be held this year because only three floats and two walking groups would be taking part in the parade. A lot of people went on Facebook and several suggested they

would get behind the parade and give it their support. Karen Sowten, the council's chief executive, said the council

would like to extend its sincere thanks to John Morgan and An- nemarie Lea, who met the councillors. She said: "They have since worked tirelessly to gain support for

this event from various local groups. We are pleased to announce that there are now three floats and eight walking groups who have signed up to take part in the parade." The carnival will take place on July 1, and Karen added that she hoped the residents of Snodland would support the parade, the stalls and enjoy the entertainment in the arena at Potyns. The council is collating a list of road marshals and is asking for volunteers to contact the council offices. Anybody interested in taking part in the parade or having a stall

at Potyns can contact the council on 01634 240228 or email en- quiries@snodlandcouncil.co.uk.

TOWNSENDHook Bowls Club has held an open day and announced that CWB estate agents in Holborough Road has agreed to sponsor the club and provide new shirts. Bridget Cork, the club chairman, said: "I would like to express our sincere thanks to Craig andWarren and, as you can see from the pic- ture, we are very pleased with our new image." The club is looking for sponsorship from other companies as it needs a new mower. Call secretary Chris Brown on 01634 242929.

Perhaps a part solution could be tri- alled, wherebymore spaces would be made available with a two-hour parking limit.” Dave Carter of A’n’D Bargain

Food Store in the High Street sug- gested the car park could be pay and display between 8am and 6pm, apart from the bays at the High Street end, which could be 15-minute free bays. Residents in Malling Road who have nowhere to park could have

one of 20 “residents only” parking bays for an annual fee whichwould go back to the community. He said: "I would be happy to

give people their money back for parking, say up to two hours, if they are using local businesses. “I hear so many of our customers

say ‘I tried to park, went round the car park twice and thought blow it, I'll just go to the supermarket.’” At a Snodland Town Council meeting in February, it was sug- gested that the Rocfort Road car park should be regularly spot checked by Tonbridge & Malling enforcement officers to ensure that vehicles in the short stay bays are only parked for a limited period. Town councillors discussed the complaints and it was suggested that the short stay section could be extended and that the short stay could be for a period of two hours. The borough council could ex-

plore the possibility of moving the recycling bins; patrolling the car park regularly and issuing tickets.
