Town Talk

THE atmosphere was not quite what you would expect at a chess tournament but the fact that it was described as a fun tournament explains why. Neil Miners, of Snodland Chess Club, and the Rev Hugh Broadbent, Rector of Snodland, organised the event at the Vic- toria Rooms – the hall at Christ Church, Malling Road – and raised more than £60 towards the cost of a new hall. Neil said: "Chess is normally played in silence, but in fun chess the players are allowed to talk to each other – if they want. "Twelve players entered and

contested five rounds. Chess clocks were used, with the time for both players’ moves being

limited to 10 minutes. In the first three rounds Peter Hickey, Bob Fenn and Simon Taylor all

recorded three wins. However, only Bob and Peter continued their winning ways in round four, setting up a winner de- cider in round five. This game was drawn so the Fun Chess Champion honours were shared between Peter and Bob. “The leading junior was Harry Steele in fourth place with three and a half points." Neil added: "All the players enjoyed the event and allowing players to have a chat during play certainly created a very dif- ferent atmosphere to a normal chess competition." Another fun tournament is planned for the autumn.

Runner hopes to

repeat success LORRAINE Shepheard has achieved her ambition of running the London Marathon before her 55th birthday – and she enjoyed it so much she wants to run again next year. Featured in the February issue of

Town Talk, she completed the course in five hours 19 minutes. She said: "It was a really enjoyable

and a lovely day for running. The crowds were fantastic." From the time when the gun sounded for the official start, it took Lorraine 31 minutes to get to the starting point. Lorraine raised £725 for the Heart

of Kent Hospice and £460 for repairs to All Saints’ Church, and has ap- plied to run next year.

Jason said: "As everyone knows

it's Joanna Cook who does the hard work and organising and it's me with the mouth." Jason joined the Snodland No-

mads committee in 2006, became vice-chairman and then chairman in 2010. "The club has moved from strength to strength over the

years," he said. "For me it is great watching all the young players across the season enjoying their football, but the highlight is always the presentation night where each player gets theirmoment on stage receiving their well earned tro- phies.

Jasonwill continue with the club running the U11s.

Bowls club raises cash towards church repairs

MEMBERS of Snodland Short Mat Bowls Club are pictured pre- senting a cheque for £775 to the Rev Hugh Broadbent, Rector of Snodland, towards the repairs to All Saints’ Church. He thanked the club and said £35,000 had been raised locally towards the £300,000 cost of ur- gent repairs which were due to

start next week. He hoped they would be finished by Christmas. The club's president, Don Cribben, told Town Talk when he joined the club 24 years ago the first charity was to raise to raise funds to pay for repairs to the windows at the church. The club holds a charity triples competition every year and this

year 24 teams from all over Kent and London were involved. Sev- enty two players took part and the winners were Tunbury BC with Burham BC runners-up. Don Cribben and chairman

Kath Bradley are standing on each side of the Rector at the presentation night at the com- munity centre.
