Death of former mayor who fought for homes

FORMER Mayor of Maidstone, Daniel Moriarty, has died, aged 73. Mr Moriarty, whowas mayor for

the civic year starting in 2015, had lived in Maidstone all his life. His parents were from Tralee, County Kerry, but he was born at Pembury Hospital, and spent his early years in Fant. He eventually became a council member for Park Wood, where he lived for more than 25 years. He worked at Whatman paper

mill for 35 years, but retired early on medical grounds after a triple heart bypass. He became involved in politics in

his 20s after meeting Labour’s Ernie Flood, who was a plumber at the paper mill and served as mayor in 1980-81. Mr Moriarty said in 2014: “I was

not politically minded, but I started doing work in the community.” Hewas first elected in ParkWood

as a Labour councillor in 2001 after retiring from his job. In 2008, mid- way through his second term, he switched allegiance to the Liberal

Democrats, with whom he parted company after being voted out in 2010. Two years later, he returned to the council as an Independent. He regarded himself not as “a

town hall councillor”, but cared passionately for his community, and became closely involved with Golding Homes during the regen- eration of Park Wood. His commitmentwas particularly

to decent homes, play areas and care for the elderly. Heenjoyed playing golf and, hav-

ing played rugby for Sidcup, re- mained a keen fan of the sport, supporting London Irish and Eng- land. His niece, Shirley Moriarty, as-

sisted him during his civic year as sadly, his wife, Lana, had her own health problems. He was a proud father to Kelly,

and grandfather to her two sons Jake and Connor. Mr Moriarty died on Monday,

May 8. His funeral took place on Wednesday,May31, atVinters Cre- matorium.

Chris Hume is new clerk

CHRIS Hume has taken over as the new clerk of Boughton Malherbe Parish Council. He replaces Christine King,

who has retired from the role after five years. Thanking Christine for her

work and support for the parish, council chairman Robert Turner said: “She has worked very hard to bring the parish council up to date, in- troducing computers and en- suring that all members complied with the ever chang- ing regulations of government, both central and local. “As a parish we will greatly

miss Chris’s advice and guid- ance as clerk, legal officer and financial officer.” He joked that it was conven-

ient that her replacement is also called Chris. Formerly of Ulcombe, he now lives in Maidstone, but has a great knowledge of the footpaths in Boughton Malherbe through his love of walking. A farewell gift was pre- sented to Chris King at the an- nual parish meeting.
