THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM SPONSORED BY:

Free support to enable innovation

By Steve Upcraft Enabling Innovation Director The University of Nottingham

Small businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are now able to access free innovation support through a new programme being run by the University of Derby, Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham. The aim of the programme,

called Enabling Innovation, is to stimulate research and innovation within small and medium-sized businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The programme provides

help for businesses in sectors such as manufacturing, materials engineering, computing and data, aerospace, food and drink, chemistry and satellite navigation – offering unprecedented access to university expertise and graduate talent. The three universities will be

offering a wide range of services for businesses through Enabling Innovation, including:

· In-depth support from academic experts.

· Workshop programmes designed to help businesses to innovate, explore new ideas and unlock their growth potential.

· Leadership and management development, including mentoring.

· Support for businesses to take on graduates via placement opportunities, allowing them to explore the benefits of employing graduates.

The project has been funded via the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), using funds secured by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Sheriff declares Commerce House open for business

As her first official duty, the new High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Annie Hall, formally opened the new office of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire). Recounting how she had joined the Chamber of

Commerce in the early 1970s when she first moved to the region from Somerset and launched a business, she said: “You weren’t considered a proper business unless you belonged to a Chamber.”

‘Commerce House gives us an office of which we can be proud’

She said that one of the first things she did was pay

£5 for a training course for company secretaries and the first thing she learned was that she wouldn’t need a shorthand notepad. “What I learned that day stood me in good stead for

the rest of my career,” she said, adding: “I would commend the Chamber to anybody and wish it well in this wonderful building.”

Mrs Hall, whose husband Michael was a previous member of the Chamber Board of Directors, then cut a ribbon over a plaque commemorating the moment. Introducing Mrs Hall, Chamber President Geoff

Poyzer told the dozens of dignitaries gathered for the opening that it was important to have an office that was “fit for purpose”. The Chamber moved from Canal Wharf, Chesterfield,

to the renamed Commerce House, formerly St Andrews House, on Millennium Way, on 24 February. Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles said:

“Commerce House gives us an office of which we can be proud and we’re delighted Mrs Hall agreed to officially open it.” The Chamber, which occupies the ground and first

floor of the building, is looking for a tenant to occupy over 3,000sq ft of available space on the third floor at Commerce House.

Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted that Ultimation Direct has joined the Chamber and that it was our 4,000th member. “We’d been sitting marginally
