CABLE INSTALLATION TRENCHLESS CABLE ROUTES Onshore cable installation routes regularly require the use of trenchless methods

A E Yates Trenchless Solutions, which own and operate a large fleet of specialist equipment offering a range of techniques, were engaged on the largest onshore windfarm in England at Keadby in North Lincolnshire for three crossings of a large watercourse to allow a number of cables to be installed.

PROJECT EXPANSION

The company were initially appointed to carry out the Horizontal Directional Drilling works but, as the works were installed ahead of the cabling works in a remote area of the project, the works package increased to include temporary access roads to the two drilling sites and provision of welfare facilities. The three 120m long drills, one at one location and two at the other, were carried out using a 25 tonne pulling force drilling rig. The sizing of the rig was determined by the diameter of the duct to be installed and the ground conditions that the duct was to be pulled through. The drill depth was around 9m to allow a minimum of 3.5m cover to the bed of the drain to comply with British Waterways Code of Practice.

PROJECT SPECIFICATION

The duct sizes were 355mm, 560mm and 630mm but each was initially drilled to 350mm and then increased by incremental reaming. The bore was supported in the temporary state by injecting biodegradable drilling fluid and the duct, supplied in 12m lengths and

butt fusion welded on site, was fitted with a towing head and pulled through towards the rig. A total of 10 sleeves were then pulled through inside the installed ducts in bundled ‘trefoil’ formation. The project was managed and delivered safely on budget and significantly ahead of schedule.

INDUSTRY TRACK RECORD

In addition to trenchless works another company in the A E Yates Group, A E Yates Limited, also have a track record

in the wind sector having carried out Balance of Plant works to fifteen onshore windfarms across the UK. This impressive record includes the decommissioning of 22 turbines and repowering with nine at the Ovenden windfarm in West Yorkshire.
