ENERGY CENTRAL

Energy Central – co-located with the Port of Blyth’s main deep-water facilities – is a premier East Coast UK location for a range of energy based industries, including the global offshore energy sector in oil, gas and renewables

A very large, scalable port-side development site on the UK’s east coast, Energy Central offers expansive land development opportunities combined with deep water, lock-free and near 365 day a year access to open sea.

STRATEGIC LAND & PROPERTY ASSETS

Wholly owned by Arch – The Northumberland Development Company, working in partnership with Port of Blyth, Energy Central offers a range of strategic land and property assets across the Blyth estuary, identified as prime locations for energy sector businesses looking to relocate and grow in Northumberland. Enterprise Zone status supports investment across these sites, either through revenue incentives to support business growth or capital investment support for projects to reduce client’s investment risk. Local Development Orders (LDOs) have also been included to help fast-track planning, investment and development within these sites.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT FUNDING

£25m of Local Government funding has been secured to provide the right conditions for economic growth within Energy Central. This funding will support a programme of remediation and reclamation to prepare a key site with dedicated dock access and unlock a significant opportunity for businesses needing quay access. Arch has the expertise to offer a

comprehensive development service which includes the provision of a design and build option for investors and the creation of a bespoke facilities to carry out client’s operations, both available on a leaseback arrangement, to minimise operational risk.

MAJOR PORT FACILITIES AND EXPERTISE

Situated mid-way between Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, Port of Blyth’s continued success and status as the fastest growing trust port in the UK is largely down to its continued growth in services to the offshore oil & gas and renewable energy markets.

Port of Blyth has established a reputation as a major hub for handling large wind turbine components from Europe and the US for onshore construction projects in the UK.

A host of major international customers

are now based at the port, many with established engineering facilities in the port or regularly using the deep water assets for a manner of complex vessel

LARGE SCALE PROJECTS WORLD’S LARGEST J-LAY PIPE SYSTEM

Having assisted IHC Engineering Business to relocate its entire manufacturing and project base into Blyth, the port has supported the assembly of the world’s largest J-Lay pipe system which will see an astonishing piece of equipment weighing in excess of 2000 tonnes loaded out on the quay. Experience of projects on this scale mean the Port of Blyth is well positioned to support the offshore wind industry, notably in the assembly of large substation structures, volume fabricated foundation systems or balance of plant storage.

BLYTH OFFSHORE DEMONSTRATION WINDFARM

Later this year EDF Energy Renewables will begin construction of the first array on the Blyth Offshore Demonstration Wind Farm project. Located 6.5km directly offshore from Blyth, EDF are currently establishing permanent offices and O&M facilities within the port in support of this nationally significant project for the offshore wind industry. The project will see five, 8MW MHI Vestas turbines built on concrete gravity base foundations. With a combined output of 41.5MW of output, the project will provide sufficient low carbon power to 33,000 homes and will be the first of its kind to utilise 66Kv cable technology.

NORTH SEA LINK

Statnett and National Grid are working together to construct the North Sea Link – an electricity link between Norway and the UK and the world’s longest subsea interconnector.

Connecting the electricity systems of the two countries via high voltage subsea cables from Kvilldal in Norway to Blyth, the project sees Port of Blyth heavy involved in another major offshore construction project with international significance. Construction will commence in 2018 and the North Sea Link will be operational by 2021.
