CABLE INSTALLATION

NEW CABLE TRENCHER SOON TO HIT THE MARKET

With a history stretching back 20 years IHC Engineering Business, part of Royal IHC has always led from the front in trenching technology

For the safe and reliable burial of subsea pipes and cable the offshore industry has made the company its first port of call. The company’s new state of the art cable trencher Hi-Traq is currently in build and will be ready for rental to the market in Q2 2017.

EXTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATOR PROGRAMME

Hi-Traq has been in development since 2012. IHC went back to first principles to understand the differing requirements of OWF cable trenching. Industry leading trenching contractors were also consulted as to their challenges not fulfilled by existing equipment. In 2013 a full sized, land based demonstration model was built. The unique four-track suspension system and centrally mounted tool concepts were proved during extensive land trials.

POWERFUL AND HIGHLY MANOEUVRABLE

Hi-Traq has 1200kW of power with more than 900kW directed to burying the cable. The four-track tooling platform provides unequalled steering and traction performance. It enables efficient operation on uneven seabeds with slopes of up to 200 including sandwaves and stratified soils. Hi-Traq comes with two tools. A 2.3m

trench depth 600kW chain cutter with an additional 300kW of eduction. It can trench in weathered rock up to 20MPa compressive strength including soils with a significant sand upper layer. In jetting mode, Hi-Traq is fitted with a 3.3m trench depth 900kW jet tool

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

It can bury cables of up to Ø300mm and CPS of up to Ø450mm with an MBR of up to 5m. With a turning radius

of under 15m, it is able to trench second end cables laid in an ‘omega’ loop. This enables burial of cable right up to monopole scour removing the need for mattressing. Hi-Traq can operate from the beach down to water depths of 500m (limited by the umbilical length).

GAME CHANGING FEATURE

A game changing feature is the patented swing damping system which allows it to be operated from an AHC crane in up to sea state 4. It can be mobilised onto vessels of opportunity quickly and cheaply maximising flexibility and minimising project cost.
