BIGGEST CAUSES OF WORKPLACE FATALITIES
HEALTH & SAFETY - TRAINING PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE
Falls from height are one of the biggest causes of workplace fatalities and major injuries and, according to government reports, account for 29% of fatal injuries. As a large part of the work that ecologists do takes place out on site, every ecologist is used to following strict health and safety guidelines. But, where they are working at height, this applies even more.
DETAILED PLANNING
Detailed planning was undertaken before the works at Navitus Bay started: all staff attended site inductions and produced on-site risk assessments for working at height. Of course, all the correct equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was used and all of the staff were City and Guilds CS38 Lantra Certified Canopy Climbers and Aerial Rescuers.
The ecologists surveyed the trees in pairs, one being positioned at the base of the tree and in constant dialogue with the climber, advising on areas that should be checked and interpreting what the climber recorded.

AWARENESS COURSE
With health and safety at the forefront of what the company does, Thomson Ecology provides ROLO (Register of Land-Based Operatives) training to all staff and now offer courses externally too. The ROLO Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Course has been designed to raise the standards of health and safety and reduce risks and accidents throughout land-based sectors.
