KPIs: More than Operating Costs
While key performance indicators are a crucial tool in helping fleet managers monitor and control vehicle operating costs, the process also helps “move the needle” in a number of other areas. Only 27 percent of STN readers
responding to a survey on the topic said they have followed suit. Those who had, however, are often measuring at least three indicators covering a broad range of data points inside and out of the bus. Driver attendance/performance led
the way as a KPI for 16 respondents followed by on-time/ride time and accident-related KPIs (13 each), safety/ speed/child checks (11), human resourc- es/salaries/hours (11), student behavior/ management (seven), maintenance (five), cost per rider/mile/bus (five), age of fleet (two), problem identification
and tracking (one), and student/parent orientation attendance (one).
Barry Brooks, director of purchasing
and transportation of the Minot (N.D.) Public Schools, has used the key per- formance indicator process since his military service several decades ago. Others, like Kim Picetti, transportation coordinator/manager of the Pyramid Lake (Nev.) Junior-Senior High School, are relative newcomers thanks to a
recent National Association for Pupil Transportation workshop. Brooks has three KPIs focused on stu- dent discipline, student/parent participa- tion in orientations and on-time arrivals and departures. The focus on student discipline has produced a streamlining of on-bus and in-school expectations and a better process of tracking disciplinary issues in both settings. Brooks and his staff track what rules are broken, when they’re broken, what corrective actions are taken and how long it takes before results are seen. “We also use that information for
driver training and refreshers. We talk- about patterns students have, best practices to handle them, dees- calating, positive reinforcement and getting the students to think
