Design now offers its own tablet with audible voice commands to help lead school bus drivers to their destinations with their eyes on the road rather than elsewhere. “Te challenge for us, as vendors, is to have everything that’s happening be in the background, auto- matically, so drivers don’t have to think about it or look away from the road,” commented Lori Jetha, Seon’s marketing director. “In general, I would estimate that live GPS tracking is in only about 40 percent of buses on the road today.” Other than dealing with tight budgets, Jetha said a transpor- tation director’s comfort level and desire to find innovative ways to protect student safety dictate why some districts are quicker to jump on the communications and GPS technology bandwagon than others. “As the industry trends towards the cell medium as opposed to a hard drive, technology can help by identifying a safe driver or a risky driver,” she added. Seon offers its new two-camera system, the DS2, as one solution


to improve driver performance. It records the bus driver and any unsafe driving behavior to correct those behaviors both imme- diately, through an LED light flashing, and long term, by giving fleet managers access to video clips and a driver safety dashboard. Te DS2 also features an event reconstruction tool that offers fleet managers the ability to accurately determine what happened on the road during an incident. Tis information can then be used


to re-train individual or all drivers. With the DS2, a manager can learn if a driver suddenly veered and braked in response to a deer in the road, for instance, or if they were distracted by something occurring inside the bus. Jetha said having this ability means that drivers can be coached for better performance, reducing collisions and insurance costs. Also, it can justify rewarding safe drivers. Jetha pointed out that Seon also offers a 360-degree camera sys- tem to give driver’s a bird’s-eye view of the danger zone around the bus via cameras mounted along the roof line. “When the bus is in ‘Park’ or ‘Reverse,” the driver can look at a 5-inch integrated por- tion of the overhead mirror to monitor that area,” she explained. Another tablet currently on the market that takes great caution not to distract drivers behind the wheel is the Tyler Drive by Tyler Technologies. Spokeswoman Jennifer Kepler said customer can customize the tablet’s screen to go blank when the bus is operation, initiate audible turn-bu-turn directions or display a navigation map of all routes with stops as well as real-time bus location. “All the information that school bus drivers refer to and rely on daily while driving, like clipboards with printed route sheets, student rosters, wristwatches, clocks attached to the dash, etc., are all replaced by the tablet computer solution,” she added. “Tis infor- mation is helpful for all drivers, but especially helpful to substitutes and drivers on field trips.” Knowing the number of students on board, and how many are getting off at each stop also increases safety and efficiency.
