GLASGOW BUSINESS OCTOBER 2014

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive chiefexecutive@glasgowchamberofcommerce.com

We all make the city a powerhouse

The Inspiring City Awards, organised by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and The Herald in association with PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW, were seven days before the referendum – and proved to be a glittering evening celebrating our city. More than 400 people gathered and there were over 160 nominations for the various awards. The success of the Commonwealth Games was clearly worth recognising. While Bridget McConnell

deserved the PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW award, I was delighted that Lord Smith of Kelvin was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. This wasn’t for just his tenure with the Games, but also all that he has done throughout his business career as chair of Weir Group and SSE and, more recently, as Chancellor of University of Strathclyde, and for ten years the University of the West of Scotland.

In his speech, he picked out a phrase from a

letter of congratulations which I sent to him after the Games. I said that our City had shown itself to be an ‘economic powerhouse and we should now stop talking about the city purely as a city of regeneration’. Lord Smith amplified that theme saying the City’s economic regeneration is done, and the city is, indeed, the powerhouse of Scotland; one in which more people need to share and to believe in. I was reflecting on this when

the referendum vote came through and while Scotland voted ‘No’ , the majority of voters in Glasgow were moved to vote ‘Yes’.

We must understand this as a clear message for change and at the Chamber we will listen and explore what we in the

business community can do to respond. When Lord Smith was named as the key person

to ensure that new powers will be delivered to Scotland, I was greatly heartened. He is a respected

Glaswegian who understands Glasgow and its place within Scotland. He knows what should to be done. He has the wisdom and the knowledge to build an inclusive task force that will indeed ensure that Glasgow builds on being Scotland’s powerhouse. Glasgow Chamber exists to support the business

growth of our members and champion the economic prosperity of Glasgow. This will be at the forefront of our thinking as we go through the next stages of constitutional change across the UK. There are many reasons why Glasgow can build on its strength as such an economic powerhouse, while we need to insure that Devo-Max has a beneficial impact on the city.

As a Chamber, we will be seeking to call to

account Westminster and Scottish politicians and the promises – some of them very late in the day – they have made, and we will be doing this through the spectacles of the Glasgow business community. We also want to work hard to ensure the City Deal delivers infrastructure projects for Glasgow. We need to continue to exploit the legacy of

the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow is a great place to visit, so we hope that there is no lingering resentment caused by the passionate and heated feelings raised during the referendum debate. Glasgow will remain in the spotlight. There is the MTV Music Awards in November, the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award in December, the All Energy Conference next May and the World Gymnastics Championships in October 2015. Next year is the Green Year. Now we must continue to engage people of all persuasions in the ambition and prospects of being Scotland’s powerhouse.
