Glasgow Talks events have proved to be eagerly anticipated additions to Glasgow Chamber of Commerce’s event diary
SPEAKER SERIES IS A MINE OF INSIGHTS
T
houghtful, practical and certainly inspirational – that’s the kind of regular feedback for the
monthly Glasgow Talks series, one of the Chamber’s most eagerly anticipated events. Glasgow Talks has brought the
members closer to the work of the Chamber – and provided a wealth of thought-provoking speakers. Alan Busby, Head of Events,
has been with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce for nine years, and was responsible for seting up the first Glasgow Talks in 2010. Te inaugural speaker was
Nicola Sturgeon, MSP, Deputy First Minister, who has been an outstanding political figure in the recent referendum debate. However, it was never the intention to make the Glasgow Talks ‘too political’.
“We were very aware that we
needed to develop our series of events to engage our members. “It has been a tremendously
successful series for us. Feedback from the members has been great too. It gives members a chance to meet and interact with not just the inspirational speakers, but those who can help them shape the businesses,” Alan said. Tough Nicola Sturgeon and
then Iain Gray, MSP and the former Labour leader in the Scotish Parliament, were early speakers, Glasgow Talks soon setled into a monthly format of leading business and society figures passing on nuggets of knowledge about how successful businesses start, run and adapt. Te partnership with Clydesdale Bank and University of Glasgow: Adam Smith Business School
extended the Chamber’s reach to some truly outstanding speakers. According to Alan, one of the
most popular speakers was Rupert Soames, the former Chief Executive of Aggreko and now heading up the outsourcing company Serco. “Rupert was a character.
He blew us all away with his talk and raised the game for what Glasgow Talks should aim to be. Since then we’ve had a number of top-class speakers.” It’s a format that has proven to
Rupert Soames’ presentation at a Glasgow Talks event raised the bar on what delegates could expect. Above: Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Glasgow Talks inaugural speaker, in conversation with Glasgow Chamber Chief Executive Stuart Patrick
be successful and clearly a winner with Chamber members, who have supported all of the Glasgow Talks events. Over the next year the Chamber continues with its Glasgow Talks series – keep checking the website so you don’t miss out on those must-see speakers.
