PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTING EVENT OF A GENERATION
Martin Darroch, Chief Executive of Harper Macleod LLP, Legal Advisers to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, gives his reaction to the big event
Tell us how you would describe the Commonwealth Games? Glasgow 2014 was simply transformational – for the city, the country and everyone associated with the Games. We put on the greatest show the Commonwealth has ever seen and, in front of a global audience, reinvented the way others see us. The sport was sensational, the crowds phenomenal and Glasgow was an incredible place to be.
What has been the reaction to the Games in your business? Glasgow 2014 has been such an integral part of our business for the past three years that the sense of anticipation within Harper Macleod was immense. There are more than 300 within the firm, and every single person was involved in some way – volunteers, batonbearers, lawyers and those taking part in all our Games activities. There was a lot of hard work involved, but the Games time itself was one long celebration. We were immensely proud to play a big part in the Games, and it will benefit us and our clients for many years to come.
What was the most inspirational moment for you and your business? There were countless great moments, and it was great to see all our hard work behind the scenes play a big part in making the Games such a success. However, one moment stands out about the rest. Watching our Athlete Ambassador for Glasgow 2014, 18-year- old wheelchair racer Samantha Kinghorn, being roared on by the Hampden crowd in the final of the T53 1500m brought a tear to many Harper Macleod eyes.
