Innovative Pain Relief Method

by Chuck Walker I

n life there are many obstacles that can hinder the body’s healing process. Some of these obstacles in-

clude poor posture, inflexibility, muscle weakness and, of course, injuries. An innovative method for dealing with chronic or acute pain, called Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT), has proven to be a very effective treatment technique. John Iams, a physical therapist,

developed PRRT after nearly four de- cades of practice and research. PRRT is a systematic approach in the evaluation

and treatment of orthopedic issues, muscle spasm and pain. People often view pain as our enemy but in actuality it is our friend. Pain is the way the body communicates a concern it has when there is an injury. As a first method of de- fense the brain reacts with a reflex. A reflex is an involun- tary, automatic response to a stimulus. We are born with a number of protective reflexes

such as the startle reflex, withdrawal re- flex and the pain reflex. As an example, if we touch something hot, these re- flexes cause us to react automatically in an effort to protect ourselves. But these reflexes can also get in the way. When there is mental or physical

strain placed on the body, our reflexes are activated in order to protect us from harm. With repetitive strain, these reflexes are constantly ‘up-regulated’, causing habitual muscle contraction

and pain. These ‘up-regulated’ primal nerves react to the slightest stimuli with an over-exaggerated response leading to patterns of pain we recognize in our lives every day. These over-exaggerated responses can also hamper the healing response. PRRT consists of a number of

techniques that ‘down-regulate’ the nervous system, relaxing the muscles and relieving pain. PRRT is a series of quick but gentle taps on a tendon with the fingers or reflex hammer. The results can be startlingly fast, sometimes even immediate. With the relaxation of the nervous system and subsequently the affected muscles, relief of symptoms can often be seen in one visit.
