Get in the GROOVE by Maria Ferrar T

he GROOVE Method™ created by Nike Elite instruc- tor Misty Tripoli and Melanie Guertin, M.Ed., is a way to connect to your own body with simple move-

ments and dance moves. Guertin explains that “health can be fostered from challenging, nurturing, healing and pleasurable activities that build strength, mobility, endurance and foster an overall sense of well-being in the body. To spend hours each week on improving one’s health should make individuals feel good and satisfied, instead of feeling like being on a never-ending treadmill to- wards a better body or a better life.” The GROOVE Method incorporates positive health

messaging which is imperative to creating a space for individuals to move freely and be able to really connect to themselves. According to Guertin, “positive health mes- saging shifts the motivation of exercise classes from an ex-

trinsically driven activity (body shaping and weight loss) to one where people of all ages, shapes sizes and ability level are encouraged to participate in physical activity for the purpose of fostering vibrant and holistic systemic, physical and mental health.” How you move should feel good for your body. Ac-

cording to Alan Fogel, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah, body sense is the “ability to pay attention to ourselves, to feel our sensations, emotions, and movements on-line, in the present moment, without the mediating influ- ence of judgmental thoughts. Embodied self-awareness [body sense] occurs in the ‘present moment’ while conceptual self-awareness, is abstract and distant from the present moment.” This is the whole foundation for The GROOVE Method.

Taking Fun Classes “Zumba Gold is a great reentry to exer- cise for baby boomers” advises Sherry Lucas, a licensed Zumba instructor in St. Louis. “Classes are approachable, available and affordable.” Recommend- ed workout wear includes comfortable sweat-wicking clothing and a good pair of shoes. Because of the side-to-side movements, she suggests tennis or bas- ketball shoes, not running shoes.
