HOBBIES

“People who have never flown before come back with huge grins on their faces”

“When it’s been snowing the views from

up there are simply superb,” he told us. “My next big step is to go for my assis-

tant instructor’s rating, which will enable me to instruct on lots more subjects and to convert onto powered flying.,” he add- ed.

For anyone interested in taking up the

hobby, Barry suggests a trial lesson, to get a feel of what it is like and see if it is really for you. “Ten join a club (all clubs are affiliated

to the British Gliding Association - www. gliding.co.uk) which lists all the clubs in the UK. Barry currently flies from Buckminster

Gliding Club located on a disused 1940s base near Grantham in Lincolnshire (ide- al gliding country). “If any LSJ reader is interested to trying

a flight, please do not hesitate to give me a call,” Barry said. “With Christmas coming, we can even

arrange vouchers for gifts and group fly- ing. And for those who remember the gliding granny on the ‘Walls proper food’ advert - that was filmed at our club.” Go to www.buckminstergc.co.uk for

more information. We asked Barry if this is an expensive

hobby. “As a guide, we currently have a deal of-

fering zero to solo for £750. How quickly to solo depends on how quickly you learn and how often you can get to the club. You do not need loads of equipment to start, just the enthusiasm to want to fly and be prepared to help out on the airfield.”
